Gray (abdomen) has been officially placed on the 15-day disabled list.
EDGE Analysis
Gray has seen progress in his recovery from an abdominal strain dating back to March 22, most recently tossing a 40-pitch bullpen session Thursday. The Rockies will deploy a four-man starting rotation to begin the season, but the 24-year-old figures to take the fifth spot in the rotation when healthy, but The Denver Post's Nick Groke reports that long-reliever Christian Bergman could fill in temporarily should Gray not be ready April 14 or 16 when a fifth starter is needed.

Gray (abdomen) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Thursday, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The young right-hander appears to be progressing well in his rehab process, but he acknowledged that he still has a ways to go yet as well. The next steps in his rehab program include a simulated game in the near future followed by a rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque. His return date should be clear depending on how those two outings go.

Gray (abdomen) has thrown three days in a row, but will start the season on the disabled list, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gray has thrown 120 balls on flat ground the past two days, but won't throw off a mound until the end of the week. If the right-hander gets to throw off a mound by the end of this week, he'll either stay back in Arizona for extended spring training, pitch simulated games in Colorado, or head to Triple-A Albuquerque for a rehab assignment. While he's out, the Rockies will either go with a four-man rotation or use spot starters like right-hander Christian Bergman in his place

Gray (abdomen) confirmed Thursday that he will not be ready for the beginning of the regular season, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gray did say that his abdomen strain isn't too severe, adding that he hopes to be ready in a few weeks. However, pitchers often miss more than a month with similar issues, and the Rockies haven't provided any kind of timetable. Despite missing a big chunk of spring training with a hamstring injury, David Hale could emerge as the favorite to replace Gray, with Chris Rusin (finger) potentially also in the mix.

Gray's MRI confirmed an abdominal strain Wednesday, but the team did not provide a timetable for his return, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.
EDGE Analysis
While it is not a direct arm injury, abdominal strains are still noteworthy for pitchers, as it affects the ability to rotate the torso. He will almost certainly start the year on the DL, as moderate oblique abdominal strains take six to eight weeks to heal. The Rockies will want to make sure Gray is fully healed before he returns to the mound, as returning too soon could complicate the issue. Chris Rusin and David Hale are presumably the top two options to replace Gray in the rotation at the start of the season, although neither pitcher comes close to matching Gray's upside, particularly in road starts.

Gray left Tuesday's game with tightness in his abdomen and will undergo an MRI, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander fielded a comebacker and tried to start a double play in the first inning of Tuesday's game, but his throw to second base sailed into center, and it seems he may have strained some abdominal muscles in the process. While the severity of the injury will not be known until the MRI results come back, this seems like the type of injury that could threaten Gray's availability for the start of the season.

Gray exited Tuesday's Cactus League start with an apparent injury, the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Gray made an errant throw on a come-backer to the mound in the first inning, at which point the club's trainer came out. It's unclear exactly what the injury is, and it's possible the Rockies are just acting extra cautiously, but the team should follow up with more details when they're made available.

Gray has decided to discontinue experimenting with his curveball in Cactus league games, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander decided to give up on the new curveball for the time being after he had troubles commanding it thus far. Gray was roughed up a bit in his last start, giving up two runs (both earned) and four hits while walking a pair over three innings, which could have been affected by his attempts to garner more control over his curveball. This development doesn't rule out the possibility of a curveball entering his arsenal in the future, but for now he'll just focus on getting his other pitches ready as he gears up to be a staple of the Rockies rotation.

Gray is scheduled to pitch in Wednesday's Cactus League opener against Arizona, the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
After tossing 155 innings between Triple-A and the big leagues last season, Gray should be able to push into the 190-200 range if he stays healthy in 2016. The Rockies may turn to veteran Jorge De La Rosa as their Opening Day starter in April, but Gray should have a strong hold on a rotation spot to begin 2016. Utilizing Gray this season will almost certainly require a format that allows for reserving the young right-hander for his home starts at Coors Field.

Gray has been shut down for the remainder of the season, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The hard-throwing right-hander has reached his team-imposed innings limited, having totaled 155 frames between Triple-A Albuquerque and Colorado this season. While the results for Gray in nine starts for the Rockies weren't great (5.53 ERA), the peripherals, namely his 40:14 K:BB, suggest he pitched better than the surface numbers indicate.
