Murphy is catching and batting eighth Friday against the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy appeared to be the third catcher on the Diamondbacks' depth chart behind Alex Avila and Jeff Mathis, though it's he and not Mathis who will become the second one to start a game this season. Despite the start, there's little reason to believe Murphy will earn enough playing time to be a valuable fantasy asset even in deep, two-catcher formats. Even if he does, he owns a .236/.280/.336 slash line in 146 career games, making him not a very appealing option.

Murphy looks on track to earn a spot on the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster after the team designated Chris Herrmann for assignment Sunday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Alex Avila and Jeff Mathis are the clear top two backstops for Arizona, but general manager Mike Hazen said Sunday that was "likely" that the team would carry three catchers, which bodes well for Murphy's chances of breaking camp with the big club. Of course, the Diamondbacks could fill their third-catcher spot by mining the waiver wire or trade market if they don't feel Murphy is up for the task. The 26-year-old owns a meager .236/.280/.336 line across 381 plate appearances in the big leagues and probably wouldn't make for an attractive fantasy option in most formats if he falls into regular playing time in Arizona.

Murphy was called up by the Diamondbacks on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy is set to make his Arizona debut in the coming days, as the 26-year-old has spent the last six weeks with Triple-A Reno following his trade to the club. During 19 games with Reno, Murphy slashed .284/.351/.373 and figures to serve as the third catcher for Arizona down the stretch.

Murphy was sent to Arizona in exchange for left-hander Gabriel Moya on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy heads to Triple-A Reno, while Yasmany Tomas gets transferred to the 60-day DL (groin) in order to make room for the catcher on the 40-man roster. During 59 games with Triple-A Rochester this season, Murphy slashed .222/.298/.330 with four home runs and 27 RBI. The 26-year-old had a rough season with Minnesota in 2016, going just 12-for-82 from the plate in 26 games. He will provide organizational depth for Arizona at the catcher's position as the team gears up for a playoff run in the coming months.

Murphy is hitting .232/.306/.446 with three home runs in 18 games for Triple-A Rochester.
EDGE Analysis
While Murphy's hitting stats may not be overly impressive, they mark a bounceback after last year's miserable season. Murphy won the major league backup role at the start of 2016, but then went 3-for-40 at the plate and was quickly demoted to Triple-A Rochester. He didn't fare much better in the minors as he hit just three home runs with a .609 OPS. If he can continue to hit the way he has so far this season at Triple-A, he'll likely get another shot in the majors at some point.

EDGE Analysis
Murphy didn't see a ton of spring action, but posted a .185 average over 27 at-bats. Jason Castro and Chris Gimenez are set to serve as the catchers on the Opening Day roster.

Murphy went 0-for-2 in Saturday's spring training loss and is hitting just .211 (4-for-19) this spring.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy is competing with Chris Gimenez for the backup catcher job behind Jason Castro. He appears behind Gimenez in the competition at this point, although the Twins would have to add Gimenez to the 40-man roster.

Murphy will compete with Chris Gimenez and Mitch Garver for the backup catcher job behind Jason Castro, ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities reports.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy won the backup role last year in spring training but then went 3-for-40 at the plate and was quickly demoted to Triple-A Rochester. He didn't fare much better in the minors as he hit just three home runs with a .609 OPS. He'll get a fresh start this spring, but he's likely behind Gimenez with Garver being a long shot.

Murphy started at catcher and went 3-for-4 with a home run in Sunday's loss to the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Murphy struggled in the majors earlier in the year before he was recalled from Triple-A on Saturday. If he shows any spark at the plate he should get significant playing time the final few weeks as the team assesses him for 2017.

Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
On the heels of a .277/.327/.406 showing in 67 games with the Yankees last season, Murphy had some buzz as a sleeper at the catcher position coming into 2016. However, he got off to a dismal 3-for-40 start and was quickly demoted to Rochester, where he remained until Saturday. The overall numbers with Rochester don't look good but Murphy did finish strong, and with Kurt Suzuki set to become a free agent after the season, the Twins may be inclined to give Murphy three or four starts per week down the stretch.
