He'll join the Rangers' 60-man roster pool and will report to the Rangers' alternate training site, but Eickhoff could be in line for a quick promotion if Texas parts with other pitchers prior to Monday's trade deadline. Eickhoff made 12 appearances (10 starts) for Philadelphia in 2019, posting a 5.71 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 58.1 innings.

He won't be able to participate in games unless a member of the current 30-man roster goes down to injury or tests positive for COVID-19.

Eickhoff allowed two runs on four hits in four Cactus League innings while posting a 7:0 K:BB.

Eickhoff was never really in contention for a spot in the rotation after signing a minor-league deal with the Padres in January. The 29-year-old is likely to open the campaign with Triple-A El Paso but could be among the first in line for a callup should a San Diego starter go down with injury. Eickhoff holds a career 4.15 ERA (4.39 FIP) and 21.3 percent strikeout rate over 440 major-league innings.

Prior to those struggles, he was a capable if unexciting starter, posting a 3.87 ERA and a 21.0 percent strikeout rate over 65 starts. There's a chance he winds up as a back-end starter at some point this season, but that would require far better health than he's had recently.
