Mathis went 1-for-3 with an RBI triple, a walk and a run Friday in the Diamondbacks' 9-4 win over the Rockies.
EDGE Analysis
It was just the seventh triple in 2,547 career plate appearances for the catcher, who has never been known for his fleet feet. Mathis will continue to serve as the regular batterymate for Zack Greinke, but his light hitting won't earn him many further starts beyond those occasions.

Mathis went 1-for-3 with a walk and a pair of runs Friday in the Diamondbacks' 7-1 victory over the Athletics.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis scored for the first time since April 30, though it's worth noting that Friday marked only his seventh start over that stretch. While he'll continue to regularly serve as the batterymate for Zack Greinke, Mathis won't be guaranteed many starts when the other four members of the rotation are on the hill and ranks as the clear No. 3 catcher behind Alex Avila and John Ryan Murphy.

Mathis went hitless across three at-bats Sunday, but was credited with an RBI groundout in the second inning of the Diamondbacks' 4-1 loss to the Mets.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis has received about two starts per week this season, with his skills as a game caller and pitch framer almost entirely responsible for his place on the roster as a third catcher. The veteran is slashing .178/.288/.200 across 52 plate appearances, which probably takes him out of the conversation for additional work even though primary backstop Alex Avila (.132/.258/.211 line, 47.2 K%) has similarly struggled. Instead, John Ryan Murphy is more likely to cut into Avila's workload behind the plate.

Mathis went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout in the Diamondbacks' 5-4 win over the Nationals on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis has been behind the plate for three of the Diamondbacks' last five games, but that has been a result of his defensive acumen rather than anything he has done with the bat. The 35-year-old is sitting on a .185/.313/.222 line (60 wRC+) for the campaign, which is somehow better than the 50 wRC+ he has posted in 2,508 career plate appearances. Even if Mathis continues to eat into Alex Avila's playing time at catcher, it's difficult to justify rostering the veteran in almost any format.

Mathis went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Friday's 8-7 win over the Dodgers.
EDGE Analysis
As the personal catcher for Zack Greinke, Mathis will be included in the lineup any time the Arizona ace is on the mound, but the backstop otherwise looks to be behind Alex Avila and John Ryan Murphy in the pecking order behind the plate. Avila has struggled to a .095/.269/.095 line this season, but his strong career marks against right-handed pitching and ability to control the run game keeps his playing time stable, while Murphy (three extra-base hits in 15 plate appearances) has flashed some power upside. Mathis, meanwhile, remains an elite receiver but has been an easy out this season, as has been the case throughout his career. He's struck out in nine of his 18 plate appearances through six games.

Mathis came through Monday with a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 15th inning to score the winning run in Arizona's 8-7 victory over the Dodgers.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis was one of the last two players remaining on the Arizona bench and would have pitched the top of the 16th inning had he been unable to get the job done at the plate. Fortunately for the Diamondbacks, it never came to that, and the catcher now has a memorable first hit of the season. After Alex Avila caught all 15 innings Monday, expect Mathis or No. 3 backstop John Ryan Murphy to start behind the plate Tuesday in the second game of the series.

Mathis (back) went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis missed nearly two weeks with back tightness but was able to suit up for Saturday's spring training contest. The 34-year-old is 4-for-14 (.214) at the plate this spring and will likely open the season as a reserve catcher for the Diamondbacks.

Mathis (back) is expected to appear in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Royals, Chris Gabel of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis has been unavailable for Cactus League action since March 14 while battling back tightness, but the catcher looks to be approaching full health after he was cleared to play in a minor-league game Thursday. Assuming he checks out fine when the Diamondbacks reevaluate him Saturday, look for Mathis to pick up some at-bats in addition to logging a few innings behind the dish.

Mathis (back) received five at-bats in a minor-league game Thursday, Fabian Ardaya of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo noted that he was encouraged by how Mathis looked Thursday, so it seems likely that the backstop will be able to rejoin the big club for an exhibition game or two before the regular season begins March 29. Mathis has altered his swing this offseason in an attempt to generate more power, but he'll have to deliver results in the games that count before garnering interest even in NL-only formats. The 34-year-old is unlikely to receive more than a start or two per week with free-agent signing Alex Avila installed as the team's primary catcher.

Mathis (back) took part in baseball activities Wednesday and could return to game action against the Indians on Friday, Owen Perkins of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis has been battling some back tightness for the past week but appears to be on the verge of getting back on the field. The catcher said that he was getting better following Wednesday's drills and that remaining out of the lineup has "just been precautionary stuff," which should ease any concerns regarding his availability for the start of the regular season.
