Mathis is out of the lineup versus the Giants on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis will receive a regular day off for maintenance purposes after going 0-for-3 during Tuesday's game. In his absence, Alex Avila will catch Zack Godley and bat eighth in the order.

Mathis is not starting Saturday against Seattle.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis' role seemed to be increasing after starting three out of four games, but he's now been on the bench for three straight. Arizona continues to have no true starting catcher. John Ryan Murphy will get the start Saturday.

Mathis is out of the starting nine versus Seattle on Friday.

Mathis is in the lineup for the third time in four games Tuesday against the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
The Diamondbacks have gone without a true starter behind the plate for most of the year and still have three catchers on the roster, so Mathis isn't a true primary catcher, but he's been the one getting the call most often lately. He's hit a solid .296/.345/.407 over his last 16 games but has a very long track record as one of the worst hitters in the league, so he's unlikely to be a significant asset even in an increased role.

Mathis went 1-for-5 with an RBI in the Diamondbacks' 9-4 win over the Padres on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Though he typically works as the personal catcher for Zack Greinke and Patrick Corbin, Mathis received a rare turn behind the plate with Robbie Ray on the mound. The pairing didn't prove effective, as Ray failed to escape the fifth inning while giving up three earned runs and throwing only 59 of 107 pitches for strikes. Mathis at least contributed to the Diamondbacks' offensive cause with a run-scoring single in the second inning, giving him 17 RBI on the campaign. That represents Mathis' highest total in the category since 2013.

Mathis went 1-for-4 with two RBI in the Diamondbacks' 6-1 win over the Rockies on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Since signing with Arizona, Mathis has offered his most value as the personal catcher for Zack Greinke, and the battery combined for one of its best showings in its two seasons together. Greinke's brilliant performance alone -- he struck out a season-high 13 and allowed two hits over eight innings -- would have been enough to justify Mathis' spot in the lineup, but the light-hitting backstop added to the cause with a two-run single in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Mathis' aptitude as a game caller and pitch framer should continue to afford him at least a start or two per week, even though he's batting just .198 on the season.

Mathis was the pitcher of record in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Padres in 16 innings after surrendering the go-ahead run in the top of the frame. He started the contest at catcher and finished the day 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles, a walk and an RBI.
EDGE Analysis
After catching the first 15 innings of the series finale, Mathis moved to the mound for his first pitching appearance since 2012 and the third overall of his career with no other options available in the Arizona bullpen. While he retired three of four hitters and even notched a strikeout, the solo blast he surrendered to Wil Myers held up as the difference in the one-run loss. With Alex Avila back from the disabled list, the Diamondbacks now have three catchers on the active roster, which is expected to limit Mathis to around one or two starts behind the plate per week going forward.

Mathis went 1-for-3 with two RBI in Monday's 9-5 loss to the Marlins.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis was behind the plate Monday for the third time in four games, signaling the high value the Diamondbacks place in his skills as a defender and game caller. The 35-year-old has historically been a black hole at the plate, but he acquitted himself well enough in the series opener with an RBI single and sacrifice fly. Mathis is still batting just .182 on the season and can largely be ignored in the fantasy realm, even in most NL-only leagues.

Mathis was reinstated from the paternity list prior to Wednesday's game.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis will return to the fold after he and his wife welcomed their second child into the world Sunday night. The catcher will start Wednesday's series finale against the Pirates and bat eighth in the order. Over 23 games this season, Mathis is slashing .190/.324/.241 with two extra-base hits and four RBI. In a corresponding move, Braden Shipley was sent down to Triple-A Reno.

Mathis was placed on the paternity list Sunday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mathis will be away from the team for the next few days as he awaits the birth of his child. He may miss up to three games while on leave, so he'll likely return to the team by Wednesday at the latest. Christian Walker was called up from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding roster move.
