Vargas allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one across six innings Tuesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas limited damage in the fourth and sixth innings to turn in the quality start -- the second in his three outings as a member of the Phillies. He continues to over-perform his skills, allowing eight earned runs across 17.1 innings since being traded despite a 7:7 K:BB. He'll look to keep his effectiveness going in his next start, currently scheduled for Sunday against San Diego.

Vargas (6-6) was charged with the loss against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday after surrendering four runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout over five innings.
EDGE Analysis
Following a solid debut with the Phillies after being traded from the Mets at the deadline, Vargas struggled a bit this time around, though the lack of run support from his offense didn't help. The loss was his first since July 12 against the Marlins, during which he also lasted just five innings with one strikeout. The 36-year-old now owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 87:43 K:BB and will look to bounce back during a Tuesday matchup against the Cubs.

Vargas surrendered two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over 6.1 innings Friday against the White Sox. He didn't factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas gave up a two-run home run in the third inning, though he managed to settle down and work into the seventh inning. The 36-year-old lefty has held the opposition to three or fewer runs in each of his last four outings, and he now owns a 3.93 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 86 punchouts over 100.2 frames on the season.

Vargas was traded from the Mets to the Phillies in exchange for minor-league catcher Austin Bossart on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Phillies are desperate for pitching help, as one might expect from a team who turns to Vargas as the answer. His 4.01 ERA on the season hides significantly worse peripherals, as he owns a 4.71 FIP and a 5.22 xFIP. His 20.3 percent strikeout rate, 9.8 percent walk rate and 39.6 percent walk rate are all within striking distance of league average but all fall on the wrong side of that mark. He'll presumably take up a spot at the back of the Phillies' rotation, though it's not clear if he'll be bumping Drew Smyly, who had a promising debut for the team, Vince Velasquez, who has bounced between the rotation and the bullpen, or Zach Eflin, who has struggled significantly over his last handful of starts. According to Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Vargas is expected to debut against the White Sox this weekend.

Vargas (6-5) allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts across 5.2 innings while earning a victory against the Pirates on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
The Mets offense exploded in the first inning for six runs, and Vargas did enough to hold the lead. The New York bullpen almost blew Vargas' chance at a win in the ninth, but the Mets held on for a one-run win. With one more out, Vargas would have posted his third straight quality start, but as it is, he won his third straight contest. He is 6-5 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, .228 batting average against and 81 strikeouts in 94.1 innings this season. Vargas will face the Pirates again in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Vargas (5-5) earned the win Tuesday against the Padres after allowing one hit and four walks across six shutout innings. He had eight strikeouts.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas may not have had his best command Tuesday as the four walks represent a season high, but he generated 15 swinging strikes to help keep the Friars off the board. The 36-year-old has a 3.96 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 76:36 K:BB through 88.2 innings and has won two consecutive outings.

Vargas (4-5) allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts across six innings to earn a victory against the Twins on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
While the Mets did win 14-4, they scored nine of their runs in the eighth or later. Vargas wasn't spectacular, but he needed his quality start to snap a two-game losing streak and win his first game since June 11. Vargas owns a 4.25 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 68 strikeouts in 82.2 innings this season. He will pitch next at home against the Padres, likely Wednesday.

Vargas (3-5) took the loss Friday as the Mets fell 8-4 to the Marlins, coughing up six runs on five hits and a walk over five-plus innings while striking out one.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran southpaw got taken deep by Curtis Granderson and Garrett Cooper in the third inning, then put the first two batters he faced in the sixth aboard before getting the hook and watching them come around to score. Vargas will take a 4.23 ERA and 64:31 K:BB through 76.2 innings into his next start Thursday in San Francisco.

Vargas (3-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Yankees after surrendering three runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out six and walked two.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas gave up two runs on three hits during the first inning but then held the Yankees off the board until the sixth when he served up a solo homer to Didi Gregorius. The veteran left-hander hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since mid-April and will enter the All-Star break with a 3.77 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 63:30 K:BB across 71.2 innings.
