Kaprielian will return to the starting rotation, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

After losing his rotation spot and being sent to the bullpen Sunday, manager Mark Kotsay said Kaprielian will rejoin the Athletics' rotation after Adam Oller was placed on the 15-day injured list. The 28-year old Kaprielian has given up multiple earned runs in all of his last five starts and could return to the bullpen if he fails to improve.

Kaprielian was available out of the bullpen for Sunday's 5-0 win over the Orioles and appears to have lost his spot in the rotation, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Oakland looks set to reduce its rotation to five men during its upcoming six-game week, with Kaprielian being moved to the bullpen while rookie Ken Waldichuk draws a second turn Wednesday against Atlanta. Kaprielian's demotion to the relief role comes even though he's shown improved form since the All-Star break following a rough start to the campaign. Over his eight second-half starts covering 40 innings, Kaprielian has turned in a 4.28 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 31:20 K:BB.

Kaprielian (3-9) took the loss Wednesday, giving up five runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings as the A's fell 5-1 to the Nationals. He struck out three.

A Jonah Bride error in the fifth inning contributed to a four-run frame for Washington, erasing Oakland's early lead and sending Kaprielian to his fourth straight losing decision. The right-hander wraps up August with a 5.59 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 23:17 K:BB through 29 innings, but the 28-year-old isn't likely to lose his rotation spot in September given the lack of alternatives available to the A's.

Kaprielian (3-8) took the loss against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing eight runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out two batters over 2.2 innings.

EDGE Analysis

Kaprielian had trouble getting the ball over the plate in the contest, tying his season high in free passes. When he did throw strikes, New York pounced on them. The ugly outing came on the heels of a strong nine-game stretch during which Kaprielian recorded a 2.59 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 48.2 innings. His season ERA stood at 4.29 prior to facing the Yankees, but it shot up to 4.88 ERA as a result of Thursday's shellacking.

Kaprielian allowed two runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts over five innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's extra-inning win over the Mariners.

Kaprielian has walked four or more batters in five of his 20 starts this season, though this was the first time he hit that mark in his last seven outings. Both runs against him came via sacrifice flies. The right-hander improved his ERA to 4.29 with a 1.33 WHIP and 71:45 K:BB through 100.2 innings this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Yankees next week.

Kaprielian (3-7) took the loss Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Rangers. He struck out five.

EDGE Analysis

The Oakland righty was effective for most of the night, but Marcus Semien tagged him for a solo home run in the third, Leody Taveras knocked a triple and came around to score on a Bubba Thompson single in the sixth. Kaprielian has now thrown over five innings in 10 straight starts but has only recorded three quality starts in that span. He will carry a 4.33 ERA and 1.33 WHIP into his next start.

Kaprielian (3-6) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out six in five innings, taking the loss versus the Angels on Tuesday.

Kaprielian fired 55 of 83 pitches for strikes and didn't give up a run until the fifth frame. The right-hander picked up his second straight win, and he has given up just one run in each of those outings. Kaprielian has been on a roll since the start of July, posting a 1.89 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB over 33.1 innings across six starts.

Kaprielian (2-5) gave up one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings to earn the win in a 7-3 victory over the White Sox on Friday.

Kaprielian took advantage of the reeling White Sox, spinning six innings of one-run ball to give his team the upset victory over Lance Lynn on the road. The 28-year-old Kaprielian leaned primarily on his fastball and slider to keep hitters off balance and cruise to his second win in 16 starts. The right-hander now has a pedestrian 4.50 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 80 innings in 2022. He tentatively lines up for another favorable matchup against the depleted Angels lineup next week.

Kaprielian didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 3-1 victory over Texas, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five scoreless innings.
