Richards has a torn UCL in his right elbow and is expected to need Tommy John surgery, Yahoo! Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Richards was scratched form his scheduled start Friday with what was originally termed "fatigue," but it appears he is dealing with a far more serious issue after being examined Thursday. Richards was the Angels' best starter this season and last, but it now looks like they will spend the rest of this season, and part of next season without their ace.

Richards (fatigue) has been scratched from his scheduled start Friday against the Rays, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Richards has been dealing with fatigue issues since his last start on May 1, and it appears the Angels want to take the cautious approach and keep him out of a turn of the rotation. There's a chance he'll return for his next scheduled start May 11 against the Cardinals, but his status should become clearer closer to that date. The Angels will make Friday a bullpen game with the right-hander unable to pitch, allowing Cory Rasmus to garner a start.

Richards (fatigue) is considered doubtful to start Friday's game against the Rays, Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Angels raised concerns about possible fatigue Wednesday, and it appears they're now leaning toward skipping Richards' start. If that is ultimately the case, the team could opt to roll with a combination of Cory Rasmus, A.J. Achter and Jose Alvarez to eat up early innings in Richards' stead.

Although Richards is scheduled to start Friday against the Rays, the Angels aren't prepared to clear the right-hander for the outing due to fatigue, the Orange County Register reports. "We're going to be cautious," said manager Mike Scioscia.
EDGE Analysis
Removed from his previous start Sunday due to dehydration after just four innings, Richards has since missed Wednesday's bullpen session, leaving him questionable for Friday's game. If he's unable to receive clearance, the Angels are expected to roll with a combination of relievers Cory Rasmus, A.J. Achter, and Jose Alvarez to eat up the early innings.

Richards was removed after the fourth inning of Sunday's 9-6 win over the Rangers due to cramping and dehydration, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Richards held Texas to one run through the first three innings, then gave up three unearned runs in the fourth. He was removed after just 79 pitches, but Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the right-hander wasn't injured. Richards has already surrendered seven unearned runs this season, which partially explains why he's 1-3 despite carrying a 2.34 ERA. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Rays.

Richards (1-3) allowed just one unearned run on three hits and five walks in Monday's win over the Royals. He struck out five.
EDGE Analysis
Richards was a bit wild but threw strikes when he needed them -- 70 of his 115 pitches went for strikes and he threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of 28 batters. Richards induced 12 swinging strikes as the Royals were off balance all night. The only three hits they managed off Richards were singles, and he has allowed just two home runs in 30.2 innings thus far this year. His ERA sits at 2.35.

Richards (0-3) pitched well, but took the loss Wednesday against Chris Sale and the White Sox. Richards allowed two runs (one earned), four hits while striking out six and walking four.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander has pitched well this season, but he has nothing to show for it. Richards owns a 3.00 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, yet he has lost three of his four outings. Unearned runs are part of the problem, as errors plagued two of his three losses. Richards will attempt to get his first victory again Monday against Kansas City.

Richards (0-2) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over six innings, but received no decision Friday at the Twins.
EDGE Analysis
Richards was cruising along with five shutout innings before giving up a pair of runs in his final inning of work as the Angels fell behind 2-1. Fortunately, the offense picked him up with three runs in the top of the seventh to get him off the hook for a potential loss. Though he's yet to crack the win column, he's off to a solid start, as he's yet to allow more than three earned runs while striking out at least six hitters in each of this three starts. He'll make his next start Wednesday at the White Sox.

Richards (0-2) allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits and one walk while striking out six over 6.2 innings, and took the loss Saturday against the Rangers.
EDGE Analysis
Richards got very little in the way of run support, and his defense didn't do him any favors in his duel against Cole Hamels. Despite posting a pair of decent outings, he's now only had a single run from the offense over his two starts. That said, the good news is that he's struck out 13 batters in his 11.2 innings of work to start the season, and his record is not indicative of his performance. He'll make his next start Friday at the Twins.

Garrett Richards took the loss on Monday as he allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven.
EDGE Analysis
Taking on the Cubs and their supercharged lineup is a tough draw for any pitcher on Opening Day, and while the Cubs put the pressure on, Richards got some big strikeouts with runners on base to keep the floodgates from bursting. Richards is unlikely to provide typical ace performance -- he posted a 3.65 ERA in 2015 and also has a 3.65 ERA in his 606 career innings -- but his strikeout potential is huge and he'll be able to get away with his mistakes against lineups that aren't as deep as Chicago's.
