The 10 strikeouts matched a career high for Lauer in the professional ranks and boosted his total to 19 over 18 frames in the Pacific Coast League this season. The 2016 first-round pick has moved quickly through the San Diego system and could garner a look from the big club at some point during the second half of the campaign, but fantasy expectations should be tempered if he receives a promotion. While the 22-year-old lefty has impressed during each of his minor-league stops to date, his below-average fastball velocity along with a dearth of plus secondary offerings in his arsenal limits his upside to that of a back-end starter over the long haul.

Lauer was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday.

The 22-year-old lefty had a solid run with the big league club this spring, notching a 2.53 ERA to go with a 1.12 WHIP over 10.2 innings. He also fanned 10 batters in that stretch while allowing three walks. However, with Opening Day looming, the Padres need to start trimming down the numbers in big league camp, so Lauer's reassignment was expected at some point before the start of the major league season. He figures to start the season at Double-A San Antonio.

Lauer has allowed only two runs over his first 12.2 innings out of the starting rotation for Double-A San Antonio.

Lauer opened the season with High-A Lake Elsinore but was promoted to Double-A San Antonio on June 28 after stifling his High-A competition to the tune of a 2.79 ERA and 29.6 percent strikeout rate over 67.2 innings. The southpaw is displaying similar prowess in the higher minor-league level, as he currently holds a 1.42 ERA and 13:2 K:BB ratio over his first two starts with San Antonio.

Lauer, 21, has a 2.95 ERA and 27:8 K:BB through 21.1 innings for High-A Lake Elsinore.

EDGE Analysis

The 6-foot-3 southpaw has baffled hitters at this level with a four-pitch arsenal and excellent location. Lauer could be a fast riser as a polished college pitcher who has found little resistance throughout his time on the mound, at least thus far.
