Major League Baseball will inform the Yankees Thursday if Eric Chavez (concussion) has been cleared to return from the 7-day disabled list.
The decision will be based off concussion tests Chavez took Wednesday. "It took a while," Chavez said. "But today I can honestly say I feel 100 percent." The 34-year-old was hitting .290 (9-for-31) with three homers and five RBI prior to landing on the disabled list last week.

Eric Chavez (concussion) has been released from the hospital, and manager Joe Girardi said Chavez is "a lot clearer."
Chavez was receiving head and spine scans, and although he's been placed on the DL with a concussion, it appears that he's been cleared of any spinal issues. Still, we'd be surprised if he was ready to go when his seven days were up.

Updating an earlier item, Eric Chavez left Wednesday's game due to whiplash and a possible concussion.
The injury evidently happened in the field, but it suddenly hit Chavez while he was at the plate, as he looked dazed and had to be led off the field by trainers. He'll go to the hospital to receive head and spine scans. We'll update his status when more is known.

Eric Chavez accounted for the Yankees' only runs in Monday's win over the Orioles, launching a two-run homer.
Chavez's bomb in the second inning is all the scoring the Yanks would need. The veteran bench player has given the team solid work this year, batting .321 with three longballs over 28 at-bats. He should continue to be a valuable role player.

Eric Chavez had three hits and drove in three of the Yankees' five runs on Wednesday.
Raul Ibanez has struggled, but Chavez wasn't doing anything to push himself into the DH mix until today. He had been hitting .167 with one RBI in 30 at-bats this spring. He probably won't have any fantasy value unless injuries strike the Yankees.

Yankees signed INF Eric Chavez to a one-year, $900,000 contract.
Chavez agreed to the deal last Tuesday. It was then finalized this week after the 34-year-old reported to Yankees camp in Tampa, Florida and passed his physical. He will function as a backup third baseman and pinch-hitter in 2012 for the Bombers after batting 263/.320/.356 across 175 plate appearances in 2011.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Yankees and Eric Chavez have agreed to a contract, pending a physical.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Chavez will receive a one-year deal worth $900,000. The 34-year-old was limited to just 58 games with New York last season due to a fractured foot, batting .263/.320/.356 over 175 plate appearances. It's unlikely he'll be able to stay healthy, but he projects as Alex Rodriguez's primary backup at third base this season.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Yankees won't budge higher from around $1 million on a contract for Eric Chavez.
Sounds pretty reasonable for a player with Chavez's lengthy injury history. The 34-year-old was limited to just 58 games with New York last season due to a fractured foot, batting .263/.320/.356 across 175 plate appearances. If re-signed, he'll serve as a backup to Alex Rodriguez at third base.

ESPN's Andrew Marchand reports that the Yankees and Eric Chavez are "expected to come to an agreement."
Marchand says the Yankees "like the idea of adding Chavez as a valet for Alex Rodriguez" at third base. And the A.J. Burnett trade has freed up enough cash to make a signing more financially feasible. Look for the two sides to intensify contract negotiations this week.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Yankees current budget has room only for Eric Chavez or a left-handed designated hitter, but not both.
This conflicts with a CBSSports.com report that the Yankees would finalize contracts with Chavez and Raul Ibanez once A.J. Burnett is officially traded to the Pirates. Sherman notes that the Yankees' front office plans to reconvene to discuss if room can be made for both areas, and that New York still favors Ibanez over Johnny Damon, but that Damon is ''still not off the board.''
