CBS Sports' Scott Miller reports that the Padres are trying to sign Edwin Jackson to a multi-year contract, but the talks are "just chatter" right now.
ESPN's Jim Bowden reported Sunday that the two sides were discussing a three-year deal. The Padres look like the favorites at this point for the right-hander, but it doesn't appear that anything is close. Jackson is also drawing interest from the Rangers, Brewers, Angels and Indians.

ESPN's Jim Bowden reports the Padres and Edwin Jackson continue to negotiate towards a three-year deal.
The Padres are "strongly pursuing" Jackson but aren't willing to go beyond three years with their offer, and he may ultimately be out of their price range. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman confirms that the Rangers have maintained interested on a short-term deal, while the Brewers, Angels and Indians have also been linked as landing spots.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Padres are "strongly pursuing" Edwin Jackson.
While the Pads appear to be big fans of E-Jax, he might ultimately be out of their price range. Rosenthal says the market for Jackson is "strong," and the Padres "may bow out" if the right-hander gets 4-5 years at $12-13 million per season. The Rangers, Brewers, Angels and Indians are also known to have interest in Jackson, though Texas and Milwaukee prefer him on a short-term deal.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman hears that the Rangers are interested in Edwin Jackson on a short-term deal.
The buzz on Jackson this winter has been pretty quiet to the point that it appears he might have to accept another short-term deal. He'll surely get more than the one year he had to settle for last offseason, but perhaps the Rangers would be willing to offer the right-hander a two- or three-year pact. E-Jax posted a 4.03 ERA and 168/58 K/BB ratio over 189 2/3 innings for the Nationals in 2012.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin met with Greg Genske, the agent for Edwin Jackson and J.P. Howell, Tuesday.
While there is no confirmation that those are the players Melvin and Genske were discussing, both would make sense. The Brewers appear to have Ryan Dempster at the top of their free agent starter wish list, but they don't want to give him three years and could be looking at E-Jax as a backup plan. Howell would fit their need to add a lefty reliever.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Angels are "one of many teams" in on Edwin Jackson.
The Indians appear to be another club that's kicking the tires on Jackson, as Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Sunday. Jackson posted a 4.03 ERA and 168/58 K/BB ratio over 189 2/3 innings in 2012 and figures to land a multi-year deal in free agency this time around after settling for a one-year pact last winter.

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer hears that the Indians have some interest in Edwin Jackson as they look to upgrade their rotation.
Jackson's agent is Scott Boras, who took a shot at the Indians at the GM meetings when he questioned ownership's desire to put together a winning club. Ultimately, though, it probably won't have much of an effect on whether or not they pursue Jackson. Hoynes also believes the Tribe could have interest in the recently non-tendered Jair Jurrjens and/or John Lannan.

The Nationals did not make a qualifying offer to impending free agent Edwin Jackson.
This means the Nationals will not receive draft pick compensation if Jackson signs elsewhere as a free agent. The 29-year-old right-hander earned $11 million this season while posting a 4.03 ERA and 168/58 K/BB ratio over 189 2/3 innings. He figures to look for a multi-year deal in free agency this time around.

Edwin Jackson said Friday that he remains open to returning to the Nationals next season.
Jackson declined to say whether there have been any extension talks. MASN's Dan Kolko suggests that the Nationals will make a qualifying offer, but it remains to be seen if they're willing to commit to Jackson long-term. After playing this season on a one-year deal, Jackson will likely hold out for a multi-year contract this offseason.

Edwin Jackson is available out of the Nationals bullpen for a decisive Game 5 against the Cardinals on Friday.
Jackson was hit hard in a Game 3 loss, surrendering four runs in his five innings of work, but could be an asset in a limited role out of the bullpen. If the Nationals are able to survive and advance, Jordan Zimmermann would get the start in the NLCS opener against the Giants.
