Cabrera (1-1) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings against San Francisco. He struck out eight.

Cabrera was excellent after surrendering a two-run home run to Mike Yastrzemski in the first inning, blanking the Giants over his final five frames while allowing just three hits. The 25-year-old Cabrera has issued just three walks in his last two starts after walking 13 in his first two outings. He lowers his ERA to 4.08 with a 1.75 WHIP and 18:16 K:BB through 17.2 innings this season.

Cabrera didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Phillies, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.

EDGE Analysis

After issuing 13 free passes in only 6.2 innings over his first two starts of the season, Cabrera had a much better command of the strike zone in this one, tossing 50 of 82 pitches for strikes. The 24-year-old right-hander still has a 4.63 ERA, but Wednesday's improvement should keep him in the Marlins' rotation, although the team doesn't have many other options for his spot at the moment. Cabrera will attempt to take another step forward when he next takes the mound, likely early next week at home against the Giants.

Cabrera (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 9-3 by the Mets, giving up two runs on zero hits and seven walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out four.

EDGE Analysis

The right-hander issued one free pass in the first inning and two in the second, but he managed to keep those baserunners from scoring before his control completely deserted him in the third. All told, Cabrera threw only 47 of 85 pitches for strikes, and he's now failed to last more than four innings in either of his first two starts of the year. If Braxton Garrett pitches well while filling in for Johnny Cueto (biceps) in the Marlins' rotation, Cabrera could find himself bumped to the bullpen or to Triple-A if he doesn't turn things around quickly.

Cabrera will not make his start against the Mets as scheduled Thursday after the game was postponed, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Major storms are expected on the East Coast, so the game will be pushed back a day to Friday. Presumably, Cabrera will take the ball that day instead, going up against Tylor Megill.

Cabrera will be included in the Marlins' Opening Day rotation and is in line to start the team's third game of the season Saturday versus the Mets at LoanDepot Park, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.

EDGE Analysis

Assuming the Marlins open the season with a five-man rotation, Cabrera looks to have secured the final spot over Braxton Garrett, who is projected to work out of the bullpen until a starting role reopens. Cabrera brings plenty of strikeout upside to the table while leaning on an arsenal that includes a mid-to-high 90s fastball and a low-90s changeup that proved particularly deadly against lefties a season ago, but poor health and high walk and home-run rates have thus far hindered the 24-year-old right-hander in his efforts to establish himself as a full-time starter in the big leagues. He appeared to take significant steps forward late last season and has carried over that success to the spring, making him an appealing target in the middle to later rounds of drafts for any fantasy pitching staff.

Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers and Johnny Cueto will make up the top four starters for the Marlins. The battle is between Cabrera and Braxton Garrett, and Cabrera appears to have the edge after his strong showing in spring training. Once considered among the very best pitching prospects in baseball, Cabrera has a chance for fantasy relevancy because of his swing-and-miss arsenal, but fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach before investing too much in the right-hander.

The offseason addition of Johnny Cueto could push a younger pitcher to Triple-A Jacksonville, although the team is also considering a six-man rotation. Cabrera was very impressive at times in 2022, riding his 96 mph fastball and nasty changeup to a 25.8 percent strikeout rate and 13.7 percent swinging strike rate, but the 24-year-old righty's 11.3 percent walk rate over 71.2 big-league innings indicates he could perhaps use some additional development time at Triple-A.
