Pomeranz is expected to start the season pitching short outings, but the Padres are not ruling out asking him to eventually pitch multiple innings, Bill Center of FriarWire reports.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz made a successful transition to the bullpen last year, holding opposing hitters to a .165 average and racking up 50 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. Manager Jayce Tingler cited the southpaw's experience as a starter in considering Pomeranz for an eventual multiple-inning role, though it remains to be seen how the season will play out. As it stands, the Padres look to have one of baseball's strongest bullpens with Pomeranz joined by All-Star closer Kirby Yates and offseason addition Emilio Pagan.

Pomeranz has agreed to a deal with the Padres, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

The deal, which is pending a physical, will be for four years and $34 million, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports. Pomeranz was utterly dominant after moving to the bullpen last year, logging a 1.88 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 39.6 K-BB% in 28.2 innings. He should operate as the Padres' top setup man and has proven capable of getting more than three outs when needed.

Pomeranz threw a scoreless eighth inning in Tuesday's victory over the Reds.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz has not seen a save opportunity since picking up saves Sept. 10 and 17 when Josh Hader was unavailable, but he has turned in three scoreless appearances. He has kept the opponent off the scoreboard 11 times in 12 appearances this month and has posted a 1.64 ERA, 0.64 WHIP and 21:1 K:BB along the way.

Pomeranz struck out four over two perfect innings Tuesday to record his second save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Padres.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran southpaw did his best Josh Hader impression, firing 18 of 24 pitches for strikes after Milwaukee had claimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hader (the genuine article) has seen heavy usage lately, pitching four times in five days to close out last week, but Pomeranz seems to be emerging as Craig Counsell's top alternate high-leverage option given his 2.16 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB through 8.1 innings in September.

Pomeranz had two strikeouts and allowed two hits and zero walks in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday in Miami.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz recorded the fourth save of his career -- and first since 2015 -- as he managed to hold off the Marlins. Regular closer Josh Hader had the night off after a busy weekend, providing the opportunity for Pomeranz. The 30-year-old has a 3.06 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 27:8 K:BB and seven holds over 17.2 innings since joining the Brewers at the trade deadline.

Pomeranz threw 1.1 scoreless innings in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz gave up four earned runs over a three-outing stretch from Aug. 7-13, but he has been stellar since, throwing 6.1 scoreless frames over five outings while giving up just two hits and posting a 9:2 K:BB. He has generally worked in middle relief since joining the Brewers, and has accumulated four holds with his new club thus far.

Pomeranz gave up one run on one hit and one walk while striking out three through three innings in a no-decision against the Pirates on Wednesday.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz wasn't expected to pitch more than a few innings, and he delivered a solid effort despite allowing a solo home run. Since becoming a full-time reliever in late July, Pomeranz has an 0.87 ERA and an 0.58 WHIP. Although he technically was given the start in this bullpen game, Pomeranz is expected to remain in his reliever role.

Pomeranz will start Wednesday's game at Pittsburgh, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz has looked good through his first two outings with the Brewers, allowing two hits and zero walks while recording five strikeouts in two scoreless frames. The Brewers will go with a bullpen day in the series finale, so the veteran left-hander figures to throw a couple innings if he pitches well. GM David Stearns said after the team acquired Pomeranz that they viewed him primarily as a reliever, and that doesn't appear to be changing despite Wednesday's "starting" nod.

Pomeranz tossed a scoreless sixth inning out of the bullpen in Monday's victory over the Pirates. He allowed two hits but did strike out three batters.

EDGE Analysis

Pomeranz allowed runners to reach second and third base with two outs, but he was able to escape the jam by punching out his third batter of the inning. He has struck out five batters over two innings since joining the Brewers prior to the trade deadline, and now owns a 13:1 K:BB over 7.1 innings since moving to a relief role in late July while still with the Giants.

GM David Stearns said the Brewers see Pomeranz "primarily as a reliever," Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

EDGE Analysis

Stearns' comments leave the door open for Pomeranz to start, which he did for the first three and a half months of the season with the Giants; but it appears he will begin his Brewers stint in the bullpen, where he found success with the Giants the last couple weeks. It would not be surprising if Pomeranz is used in high-leverage spots with the Brewers looking for more options in those situations, but fantasy players should not expect him to be in the mix for saves with his new club.
