Overton is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

It sounds like Overton will serve as an insurance policy behind Thursday's starter Daniel Mengden, providing emergency length out of the A's bullpen. Overton has been clobbered at the major league level this year to the tune of a 10.97 ERA, but he's been serviceable during his time with Nashville (3.29 ERA, 1.30 WHIP).

Overton was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

In a corresponding move, the team called up fellow left-hander Patrick Schuster on Saturday. Overton has started five games for the A's this year, but has been battered around, allowing 26 earned runs off 43 hits over 21.1 innings of work. He will look to find his grove back in Nashville, and has a good chance to return to the team before the end of the year.

Overton is expected to start Friday against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

EDGE Analysis

With Jesse Hahn slotting into the rotation Thursday (replacing Rich Hill), the rest of the starts will move back a day. Overton will now be at home for his next start, but Overton has struggled even more at home (10.61 ERA) than on the road (8.00 ERA) this season, and he will face a much tougher matchup in the Cubs as opposed to the Angels. He's about as high-risk as they come right now.

Overton (1-2) allowed five runs on 10 hits, including three homers over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Indians on Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

The 24-year-old has made just four MLB starts, but he's been lit up in all of them. He's tossed up 34 hits, including nine home runs in 18.1 innings. Ironically, Overton has been able to keep the ball in the park in the PCL (a league notorious for hitting). He's allowed just three bombs in 103.2 innings at Triple-A Nashville, but clearly, Overton is having problems at the next level. If he remains in the rotation, his next scheduled start is Thursday against the Angels.

With Rich Hill (hand) landing on the DL Saturday with a blister, the A's were in need of another starter to fill the void and Overton got the call up. Overton was roughed up in his first three major league starts this season, producing a 8.40 ERA over 15 innings but he's been phenomenal in his last 10 starts for Nashville, going 9-0 with a 2.22 ERA over 65 innings. He'll look to bring that type of quality pitching when he faces off against Josh Tomlin and the Indians on Saturday.

The A's opted to bring up utility man Arismendy Alcantara on Wednesday, so Overton will head back to Nashville in order to free up a spot on the 25-man roster. Overton has struggled through three starts for the big league club this season, allowing 14 earned runs on 24 hits across 15.0 cumulative innings.

Overton allowed three runs on nine hits with six strikeouts over 6.1 innings in a no-decision Tuesday against the Astros.

Overton fared much better than in his first two major league starts, in which he combined to allow 11 earned runs on five home runs over 8.2 innings. He did get touched up for a solo home run by George Springer, but thanks to his excellent control -- no walks, 72 strikes in 107 pitches -- he was able to limit the damage. Overton pitched well enough to stay in the rotation, but it's unclear if Rich Hill will be ready to return by his next turn -- if so, Overton will likely head back to the minors.

Overton was recalled by the Athletics ahead of his start against the Astros on Tuesday.

Tuesday marks Overton's first big league start since being shelled by the Giants at the end of June when he gave up eight earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. The long ball has been an issue with Overton in his two starts, even at Oakland Coliseum, as he's given up five home runs in 8.2 innings of work.

He has struggled with control in the majors with five walks, and he'll need to turn that around if he's going to be successful.
