Marrero signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training with the Marlins on Monday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero got into 49 games with Arizona as a utility man last season, hitting a miserable .167/.224/.205. Those numbers weren't far off his career .197/.250/.283 slash line, compiled over 343 plate appearances across parts of four seasons. He can fill in around the infield but his bat is far too weak for him to be a noteworthy real-world or fantasy asset.

The Diamondbacks activated Marrero (oblique) from the 10-day disabled list Tuesday and designated him for assignment, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero appeared in seven minor-league rehab games and proved that he had fully recovered from the left oblique strain that had kept him sidelined since late June, but the Diamondbacks had no need for him on the active roster as a utility man with all of Eduardo Escobar, Ketel Marte and Daniel Descalso capable of playing multiple spots around the infield. It's possible that one of the MLB's other 29 teams may value Marrero's defensive prowess enough to trade for him or put in a waiver claim, but the 27-year-old seems destined for a bench role regardless of where or when he gets his next opportunity in the majors.

Marrero (oblique) started at third base Sunday in a rehab game at Triple-A Reno and went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero played all nine innings in the field for the second consecutive day, an indication that the left oblique strain that forced him to the disabled list June 30 is no longer a concern. It's expected that Marrero will be activated from the DL in the coming days and reprise his utility-infield role with the big club.

Marrero started at third base and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Wednesday in his rehab appearance for Triple-A Reno.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero played in three rehab games in the rookie-level Arizona League before shifting his assignment to the Pacific Coast League. He logged six innings in the field Wednesday and may need to appear in a full game or two before the Diamondbacks are comfortable bringing the utility man back from the 10-day disabled list.

Marrero (oblique) has appeared in two rehab games for the Diamondbacks' rookie-level Arizona League affiliate, going a combined 1-for-5 at the plate in those contests.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero's last appearance came Sunday, but there hasn't been any reports to suggest that he's endured a setback in his recovery from the left oblique strain. Once the 27-year-old logs some more at-bats in the minors and proves he's fully healthy, he'll be ticketed for a utility role with the big club.

Marrero (oblique) has accelerated his workouts but hasn't been cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, the Associated Press reports.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero has been on the shelf since June 27 with the left oblique strain. The Diamondbacks likely aren't eager to rush Marrero back to the big club, especially with two capable utility options already on hand in Daniel Descalso and Chris Owings.

Marrero was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique Saturday.

EDGE Analysis

The assignment is retroactive to June 29, so Marrero could return June 10 against the Rockies. Jimmie Sherfy was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

Marrero started at third base and went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Marlins.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero was making his first start in 10 games and only his fifth of June. The 27-year-old boasts a sound glove at multiple infield spots, but with Daniel Descalso giving Arizona a capable utility option with more offensive upside, Marrero seems like a redundant piece. It wouldn't be surprising if he was removed from the 40-man roster later in the season if the Diamondbacks need to open up a spot for another pitcher, catcher or outfielder.

Marrero will start at third base and bat eighth Wednesday against the Brewers.

EDGE Analysis

After occupying the short side of a platoon at third base with Daniel Descalso for much of the season, Marrero's limited workload will only get smaller following Jake Lamb's recent return from the 10-day disabled list. Marrero will pick up just his second start in 13 games Wednesday while the left-handed Lamb and Descalso sit out with southpaw Brent Suter on the mound for Milwaukee.

Marrero went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in the Diamondbacks' 4-2 win over the Padres on Sunday.

EDGE Analysis

Marrero has picked up the last four starts at the hot corner, but it's worth noting that the Diamondbacks have opposed left-handed starting pitchers on three of those occasions. As such, the lefty-hitting Daniel Descalso still seems in line to receive the bulk of the starts at the position until Jake Lamb (elbow) returns from the 10-day disabled list, at which point Descalso and Marrero will both fade into utility roles.
