Derek Jeter jogged Monday for the first time since landing on the disabled list with a calf strain. Jeter told reporters after the light workout that he feels like he is finally taking "steps in the right direction." The veteran shortstop should progress to sprints by the end of this week and remains on track to return to the Yankees' starting lineup sometime in early July. He's been on the 15-day disabled list since June 14.

Derek Jeter (right calf strain) is aiming to begin a running program early this week. Jeter hit off a tee and took soft toss this weekend at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida. He's hoping to have a recovery timetable mapped out soon after he begins his running program. "You've got to run. Once you start running, then we'll have a better sense," said the shortstop. "If it was up to me I'd be playing now, but you have to be smart."

Derek Jeter (calf) hit off a tee and took soft toss at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Fla. Saturday. He has not, however, begun running, which will be a much bigger test than hitting drills. Until he is able to sprint without any pain, the Yankees will not set a timetable for Jeter's return. He'll have to play a game or two on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Yankees. "I don't think there is an exact science," manager Joe Girardi said. "We just have to make sure his legs are under him and that he can make those sharp cuts that he needs to make. He can get out of the box fine. When he does start that, we have to make sure he is ready, in a sense."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi conceded Friday that Derek Jeter (calf) may not be ready to return from the disabled list when he's eligible next "We're getting to the point where Wednesday is probably in jeopardy, but I can't rule it completely out," said Girardi. "He's still not really doing baseball activities. He's still a little bit sore so (we'll) just continue to monitor it every day and go slow until it's ready." Jeter has been throwing in Tampa, but has yet to run or swing a bat. These calf injuries can be tricky, especially with a player of Jeter's advanced age, so the Yankees aren't about to rush him back.

Derek Jeter's potential return on June 29 is in serious doubt, as he has not yet taken batting practice, fielded balls, or run. "He is still feeling the calf," general manager Brian Cashman said. "He is doing nothing but long-toss. He is getting better but not in position to do anything yet." The Yankees will not rush Jeter back, so it will be difficult to gauge how long he'll remain sidelined until he starts testing his calf. In the meantime, backup Eduardo Nunez has played commendably since being thrust into the starting lineup, hitting 9-for-31 (.290) with a home run, four RBI, and a pair of steals.
