Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated following Tuesday's game that he may give Derek Jeter a day off Wednesday. Jeter went 2-for-6 in Tuesday's win over the Indians and now sits four hits away from 3,000 for his career. While it's easy to be cynical about the motivation for sitting him, Girardi was adamant that his decision will not be influenced by Yankees' management. "My concern is us winning games, and him being healthy," said Girardi. "No one has ever said a word to me on where he needs to do it." Girardi plans to consult with Jeter before making a final decision Wednesday.

He'll go for career hit number 2,995 on Tuesday against Cleveland righty Carlos Carrasco.

Yankees activated SS Derek Jeter from the 15-day disabled list. As expected, Jeter will bat leadoff Monday night against Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin. The veteran shortstop needs just six hits to reach 3,000 for his career, so look for him to get a day off during the three-game series in order to put him in position to accomplish the feat this weekend at Yankee Stadium. No word on the corresponding roster move yet, but oddly Ramiro Pena and Eduardo Nunez and both listed on the bench for Monday's game.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports Derek Jeter will "definitely" rejoin the Yankees in Cleveland for Monday's game. Jeter looked good in a Sunday rehab game with Double-A Trenton and will almost certainly be in Monday's starting lineup to take on Josh Tomlin and the Indians. It's hard to imagine Ramiro Pena not getting the demotion to clear a roster spot for Jeter.

Derek Jeter (calf) went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored Saturday in his first rehab game with Double-A Trenton. "I feel good," Jeter said after the game. "There are no problems whatsoever. It's just getting at-bats and playing, but I feel good." Yankees GM Brian Cashman was also pleased with how Jeter looked. "Today looked great," Cashman said. "He looked really good... He looked better at the plate than we expected, and I thought defensively there was a pretty tough play to make." Cashman said previously that Jeter wasn't a lock to join the Yanks Monday, but, assuming he comes through Sunday's game with Trenton fine, he's fully expected to be activated.

Derek Jeter (calf) isn't a lock to return from the disabled list Monday. Rain forced his scheduled workout in Tampa Friday to be scratched, but he's still on track to play in rehab games with Double-A Trenton Saturday and Sunday. "If everything goes right, we will try to get him to Cleveland," Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. "Monday is the day we are shooting for, but it depends." Assuming he doesn't have a setback, we fully expect Jeter to be in the lineup Monday.

Derek Jeter (calf) could begin playing in rehab games at Double-A Trenton as early as Saturday. Jeter took batting practice, ran the bases and fielded ground balls on Wednesday without feeling any kind of abnormal pain or discomfort in his once-strained right calf. The veteran shortstop is sitting on 2,994 career hits and should return to his pursuit of 3,000 before the All-Star break.

He also ran seven times from home plate to first base, once from first to second and twice from second to third. "[I expect to] do the same thing [Thursday]," said Jeter. "You just keep continuing to pick up the intensity, and we'll see what happens from there." Jeter has not discussed a potential return date with Yankees' officials, but he appears on track for a return in the early part of July.
