Derek Jeter will be sidelined until at least Tuesday due to a sore left calf. Jeter dealt with calf issues last season, but it was his right one. At this point it seems likely merely a precautionary move and nothing to worry about as long as he indeed returns early next week. Jeter batted .297/.355/.388 last season for the Yankees and will turn 38 in late June.

Speaking at Friday's annual State of the Captain address, Derek Jeter told reporters he has no imminent plans of retirement. "If I didn't think I was capable of playing the game at a high level, I would go home," Jeter said. "If I wasn't enjoying myself, enjoying the competition, then it'd be time to go home. Right now, I think I'm capable, and I'm enjoying myself." Questions remain as to whether Jeter can avoid a regression entering his age 37 season. He still has three years remaining on a $51 million contract extension signed in 2010.

Derek Jeter hit on the field Monday at Yankees camp. It was his first workout of the spring. Jeter, who arrived at the Tampa complex more than a week early this year, is trying to improve over the .297/.355/.388 batting line, six homers and 61 RBI that he posted in 2011.

According to ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine, former Cubs GM Jim Hendry has been hired by the Yankees. Hendry will function as a special assistant to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman as part of a multi-year agreement. He was let go by Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts in August after two straight fifth-place finishes.

The Yankees will not make an announcement Monday on GM Brian Cashman's contract status. Reports last week said the two sides had already reached an agreement, but Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York says Cashman is now "not taking calls." Perhaps he's traveling, or maybe he wants to wait until CC Sabathia has officially opted out of his contract to avoid answering questions on the matter. Either way, we should have some answers by the middle of this week.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Yankees and general manager Brian Cashman have reached an agreement on a new contract. There was never any doubt, but the Yankees will make it official once the World Series is complete. Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reported Thursday morning that Cashman is expected to receive a three-year contract to remain GM.

Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News reports that negotiations between the Yankees and general manager Brian Cashman are "just about" complete. Not a surprise, as most expected negotiations to go smoothly. Cashman's new deal is believed to be for about three years. It will be done by October 31, but could be announced once the World Series is over this week.

According to ESPN New York, Yankees GM Brian Cashman will have a new contract agreement by Halloween. "It will be done by Oct. 31," a team official told Andrew Marchand and Wallace Matthews. Cashman's first order of business will be to take care of CC Sabathia, who is expected to opt out of his contract with the Yankees this offseason in order to secure a few more dollars and years.

Derek Jeter scuffled at the plate in Sunday's Game 2 ALDS loss, finishing 0-for-5 while fanning twice. He also left five runners on base. It's only the third time since 2000 -- spanning 10 postseasons -- that Jeter has struck out at least twice in consecutive playoff games.
