Hess allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings during Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the White Sox. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
EDGE Analysis
Hess needed 96 pitches despite not making it through five innings, thanks in part to three errors, one of which he committed himself. The 25-year-old has a 5.34 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB through 30.1 innings this season. His status for the next turn through the rotation will depend on when Alex Cobb (back) is able to return from the injured list.

Hess will rejoin the Orioles' rotation in the place of injured Alex Cobb (back) Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hess was recently relegated to the bullpen, but will have another chance to start on Wednesday against the White Sox. He's yet to get it going on the mound through 26 innings, posting a 5.88 ERA though he does have a respectable 1.23 WHIP.

Hess will transition to a bullpen role, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hess has struggled to a 5.88 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 26 innings this season, so he'll shift to a relief role, at least for now. John Means will remain in the starting rotation as a result.

Hess (1-4) took the loss Monday, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out three as the Orioles were routed 12-2 by the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander held the Pale Hose off the board for four innings, but a James McCann homer in the fifth opened the floodgates. Hess has been dreadful since his no-hit performance against the Jays on April 1, dropping four straight decisions with an 8.66 ERA and 8:4 K:BB through 17.2 innings. He'll get a couple extra days rest before he tries to turn things around next Monday in a rematch with the White Sox back in Chicago.

Hess (1-3) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up six runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- over two-plus innings as the Orioles were downed 8-1 by the Rays.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander didn't issue a walk or a strikeout, as Tampa hitters simply punished anything he threw near the plate, banging out two doubles in addition to the three long balls. Hess' early success has faded fast, and he'll take a 5.57 ERA into his next outing Monday, at home against the White Sox.

Hess (1-2) surrendered three runs on six hits while striking out three over 5.2 innings and took the loss Friday against Boston.
EDGE Analysis
Hess gave up a solo homer in the third inning and two more runs in the fourth, and the Orioles were held out off the scoreboard until the seventh frame. The 25-year-old right-hander came within one out of a quality start and certainly pitched well enough to come away with the victory, but he simply didn't get enough run support. Hess owns a 3.32 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 19 frames in three starts this season.

Hess (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings Sunday against the Yankees.
EDGE Analysis
Hess surrendered a pair of solo homers in the second inning, which was followed by a two-run blast in the third. He was lifted after the fifth inning with his team facing a four-run deficit. The 25-year-old right-hander certainly didn't pitch well enough to deserve a win in the series finale, but he began 2019 with 8.1 scoreless innings in his first two appearances and will aim to return to form in his next scheduled start Friday against Boston.

Hess (1-0) no-hit the Blue Jays through 6.1 innings Monday, allowing only one walk while striking out eight to pick up the win in a 6-5 victory.
EDGE Analysis
Somewhat shockingly, the right-hander got pulled after 82 pitches (50 strikes), but the fact that he threw 42 pitches in relief Thursday may have played a part in manager Brandon Hyde's thinking. Not so shockingly, the Orioles' bullpen quickly squandered the no-hit bid, but it couldn't ruin the win for Hess. He only managed nine swinging strikes, so he may not rack up strikeout numbers like this any time soon, but at the very least Hess has earned himself a longer leash in the O's rotation. He'll next take the mound Sunday, at home against a Yankees lineup already dealing with a host of injuries.

Hess is slated to start Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Though Hess secured a rotation spot out of spring training, his first appearance of the season came in relief during Thursday's loss to the Yankees. He covered two scoreless innings in that outing, so there's a chance his pitch count could be restricted Monday as he returns to the hill on three days' rest.

Hess appears in line to start the Orioles' fourth game of the season April 1 versus the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hess will technically be the No. 3 starter in the pitching schedule, as the Orioles plan to use Nate Karns as the opener in a bullpen game in their second game Saturday versus the Yankees. Manager Brandon Hyde hasn't indicated that he plans to make regular use of the opener this season, but Hess' hold on a rotation spot will likely be tenuous even if the Orioles opt for a traditional five-starter setup. Hess posted a 4.88 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6.4 K/9 over 103.1 innings as a rookie last season and fared similarly poorly in his six outings in spring training.
