Carpenter elected free agency after he was outrighted off the 40-man roster, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Carpenter missed extended time towards the end of the 2015 season with a shoulder injury, but his wealth of experience in the majors will likely lead to a contract from another team during the offseason. He's just two years removed from posting a career-best 1.78 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 65.2 innings with the Braves.

Carpenter pitched a perfect inning in his Nationals debut Friday, striking out one.
He was brought into the game with the Nats down 8-4 though, so don't expect to see Carpenter in any high-leverage situations any time soon. He's pure fungible bullpen filler.

Carpenter was traded to the Nationals in exchange for Tony Renda on Thursday.
Carpenter had been designated for assignment earlier this week and since he was not claimed by any teams, his trade value was obviously not high. He had a 4.82 ERA in 22 relief appearances for the Yankees, but his 5.30 K/9 ratio speaks to his lack of late-inning upside.
