Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez missed a month and a half at Worcester due to a torn meniscus but returned to game action early last week. The southpaw allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six in 3.1 scoreless innings over four appearances in the minors after returning to full health, and he'll rejoin the major-league club after Josh Winckowski (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list.

Hernandez has pitched well in three outings for Triple-A Worcester since returning from a torn meniscus Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez struck out two in a scoreless inning Saturday, giving him five strikeouts in 2.1 scoreless frames since his return. His 5.95 ERA in 19.2 innings prior to the injury was quite poor, so he'll have to continue pitching well if he's to push for a return to the big leagues.

Hernandez underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus Thursday and will be out indefinitely, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 25-year-old landed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester earlier this week with a MLC sprain, but he apparently also suffered a torn meniscus. It's unclear how long Hernandez will be sidelined, but he shouldn't be expected back anytime soon.

Hernandez was placed on the 7-day injured list for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday due to a strained right knee, Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez suffered the injury during a bullpen session Saturday. He'd struggled to a 5.95 ERA in 19.2 innings prior to the injury while walking 17.8 percent of opposing batters. It's unclear how much time he'll miss beyond the minimum seven days.

Hernandez is expected to start the opener for Triple-A Worcester, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Sox optioned Hernandez to the WooSox on Saturday in a surprising move, as the left-hander appeared to be ticketed for a bullpen role in Boston. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Hernandez is expected to throw two-to-three innings per start with the goal to iron out his control, which has been an issue in the majors and minors -- he's consistently posted high BB/9 numbers, including a 7.0 mark for Boston in 2021. The belief is that he can put in work between starts with pitching coach Paul Abbott and become more consistent spotting his pitches. "We want him to throw fastballs up and breaking balls down and be consistent with that," Cora said. "And the more strikes he throws and when he throws the fastball up, there's no damage." Long term, the Red Sox still view Hernandez as a reliever, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com, but they want him not only in the zone, but in proper spots within the zone.

Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez had looked like he had a good shot to break camp in the big-league bullpen and was reportedly preparing to handle a multi-inning role. He'll instead head to the minors for now, presumably to work on his control. He's struck out 33.6 percent of opposing batters through 78.2 career major-league innings, but his 17.6 percent walk rate is far too high.

Hernandez is being stretched out for a multi-inning relief role this spring, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez is expected to throw three innings in his next outing, though he's combined to throw only 2.1 innings across his first two spring appearances. A multi-frame relief role would be new for him, as he recorded more than three outs in only five of his 48 appearances in 2021. In order to successfully work longer outings, Hernandez would almost certainly have to improve upon his control, as he's walked 65 batters across only 78.2 career innings.

Hernandez was added to the Red Sox's roster Friday ahead of the ALCS against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez wasn't in Boston's plans for the Wild Card Game or the ALDS, but he'll have the chance to make his postseason debut this round. The Red Sox may have decided they needed one more left-hander in the bullpen, or he may simply have been the team's next-best reliever with Garrett Richards out with a hamstring injury and Matt Barnes not trusted with a roster spot.

Hernandez will not be part of the Red Sox's wild-card roster, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez worked around a 17.0 percent walk rate this season to finish with a 3.38 ERA in 40 innings of work. He closed the season well, allowing runs in just one of his last 11 appearances, but he evidently isn't trusted enough to pitch in the highest-stakes game of the year thus far.

Hernandez (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hernandez began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and allowed no hits and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning during his lone appearance. The southpaw had been on the IL since July 31 but will be available out of Boston's bullpen for Friday's series opener against the White Sox.
