Ray was placed on the minor-league injured list Wednesday with a right middle finger injury, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

The transaction was made earlier Wednesday but it was previously unclear what injury Ray was dealing with. The 24-year-old apparently sustained the finger injury on a dive attempt Tuesday and isn't expected to face a lengthy absence.

Ray (undisclosed) was placed on the 7-day injured list Wednesday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

It's unclear what Ray is dealing with or how long it will keep him sidelined at this point. The outfielder was off to a slow start to the season with Triple-A San Antonio before getting injured, slashing just .170/.250/.170 with two stolen bases in 12 games.

Ray isn't a real candidate to earn a job right out of camp, as he's yet to reach Triple-A, but he'll get a chance to show of his skills in front of the big-league coaching staff. Unless he struggles significantly at Triple-A, he'll likely be up at some point in a bench role later this season. Struggles can't be ruled out, though, as he's posted a strikeout rate above 29 percent for two straight years, keeping his batting average below .240, so he'll either have to make more contact or keep showing good power and speed if he's to be a major-league asset.

Ray hit .241/.325/.479 with 27 home runs, 74 RBI and 37 steals over 135 games with Double-A Biloxi this season.

Ray's batting average was right in line with his career mark, but he showed modest improvement in his plate discipline, and made major strides in the power department. He had fallen down prospect lists heading into 2018, but after being named the Southern League's MVP this year, he has put his name back on the map. He will turn 24 in September, so there's a good chance the Brewers let him get his feet wet at the Triple-A level in 2019.

Ray went 3-for-5 with a home run and two doubles in a game with Double-A Biloxi on Sunday.

Ray has really gotten things going at the plate this season, particularly this month, one in which he has hit .295/.375/.705 with eight home runs and 19 RBI through 20 games. He has also found a lot of success on the basepaths in 2018, coming up successful on 30 of his 34 stolen-base attempts. All in all, Ray has reestablished himself as a prospect after a couple subpar seasons to kick off his professional career.

Ray finished 3-for-5 with three home runs and four RBI for Double-A Biloxi in its 8-3 win over Jackson on Wednesday.

The three-homer day boosted Ray's season total to 16, allowing him to overtake teammate Jake Gatewood for the Southern League lead. The outfielder's strikeout-prone tendencies have depressed his batting averages at every stop of the minors, but his plus power and plus speed continue to make him an attractive asset in dynasty leagues. In addition to his impressive home-run output, Ray boasts a 21-for-25 success rate on stolen-base attempts this season.

Ray reached base in all five of his plate appearances Sunday in Double-A Biloxi's 11-4 win over Jacksonville. He recorded two doubles, two bases, a walk, a stolen base and scored three times in the victory.

EDGE Analysis

The four-hit showing tied a season high and lifted Ray's line to .259/.358/.478 across 285 plate appearances in the Southern League. After a rough campaign at High-A Carolina in 2017, the Brewers' 2016 first-round pick has made major strides this season while facing higher-caliber pitching. He has boosted his BB/K from 0.31 to 0.49 and has nearly doubled his power production (.129 ISO in 2017, .219 ISO in 2018). The outfielder's toolsy profile makes him an appealing hold in dynasty formats, especially if he's able to maintain the improvements he's shown with his plate discipline as he rises through the system.

EDGE Analysis

Ray had just four triples and 40 total extra-base hits over 112 High-A games a year ago, but he will have a chance to surpass both numbers if his early success continues. While Ray is showing more power, contact remains an issue, as he has already struck out 10 times -- while walking just twice -- in 2018.
