Flexen surrendered a Yordan Alvarez three-run homer in the first, then allowed four more runs on five hits in the fourth to snap his streak of starts with three runs or fewer permitted at eight. It's the 27-year-old righty's second straight loss and he sports a solid though 3.81 ERA though he has a mediocre 1.25 WHIP and low 5.7 K/9.

Flexen (9-4) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Athletics after allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while fanning one across 5.1 innings.

Flexen ended just two outs away from recording another quality start and while he delivered a decent outing in this one, he was outdueled by Sean Manaea. The right-handed Flexen has given up two or fewer runs in each of his last four outings and owns an excellent 1.42 ERA across 25.1 innings this month. His next start is scheduled for next week at home against the Astros.

Flexen is listed as the Mariners' probable starter for Thursday's game against the Athletics.

The right-hander dominated despite registering only seven swinging strikes and a quiet six punchouts. Flexen has shown this season that it is still possible to get by as a major-league starter without racking up strikeouts -- his 6.1 K/9 ranks in the bottom 10th percentile among pitchers who have tossed at least 50 innings, but that hasn't stopped him from posting a strong 8-3 record, 3.51 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. He is not a big strikeout threat, posting a low 6.0 K/9. He has been very solid recently, firing a quality start in each of his last five appearances.

Flexen served up a two-run double to Marcus Semien in the second frame, then worked his way into trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases by allowing a double and back-to-back free passes. Luckily, the right-hander was able to limit the damage to one run on a sacrifice fly by Cavan Biggio. After tallying 14 strikeouts and giving up just one run in his previous two starts, Tuesday's shaky outing was a bit of a disappointment, including his season-worst three walks. The 26-year-old will carry a 3.97 ERA and 1.30 WHIP into his next projected appearance at home Sunday against Texas.
