Flexen was likely destined for a short stay on the roster regardless of his outing Saturday, but his performance certainly didn't help his case to stick around. He lasted just 4.1 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks. He failed to strike out a single batter. Daniel Zamora will take his place on the roster.

As expected, Flexen will move up to the big club as the replacement in the rotation for Jacob deGrom (elbow), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday. DeGrom will undergo an MRI on Monday, which should provide more regarding the length of his stay on the IL. With a team off-day coming up April 25, the Mets would be able to get by without a replacement for deGrom until April 30 versus the Reds. With that in mind, there's a decent chance Flexen is sent down to the minors after Saturday's outing to afford the Mets more roster flexibility over the next week and a half.

Flexen will have huge shoes to fill, as he'll be tasked with replacing Jacob deGrom, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday after experiencing complications with his elbow in a recent throwing session. DeGrom is slated to undergo an MRI on Monday, at which point it should be known whether a replacement for him will be needed beyond this weekend. The Mets aren't exactly teeming with quality rotation depth in the high minors, so Flexen might only need to avoid a complete implosion Saturday to earn another start if deGrom is in fact out for more than the minimum amount of time.

Flexen was one of three players on the 40-man roster shipped back to the minors, with fellow pitchers Franklyn Kilome and Drew Gagnon joining him. All but one of Flexen's four appearances with the Mets last season came in relief, but he'll likely continue his development as a starter at Triple-A Syracuse to begin 2019.

Flexen (knee) is listed among the Mets' available bullpen arms for Saturday's Grapefruit League opener versus the Braves, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Flexen ended the 2018 campaign on the shelf after requiring surgery in early August to repair a torn meniscus. Based on his availability for the exhibition opener, Flexen didn't incur any major setbacks in his recovery over the winter and should get the opportunity to compete for a multi-inning relief gig in camp. It's more likely he opens the season in the Triple-A Syracuse rotation, however.
