Chipper Jones (knee) will take live batting practice Tuesday at Triple-A Gwinnett. Jones ran at about 90 percent effort on Monday and reported no problems after the workout. If all goes according to plan, the veteran will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Single-A Rome.

Updating a previous item, Chipper Jones (knee) is tentatively scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Class A Rome. We had previously heard Thursday, but Friday will be the day. Either way, he's making rapid progress from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Jones is expected to serve as the designated hitter on Friday and Saturday before being reevaluated. While he is eligible to be activated from the disabled list on Sunday, he likely won't rejoin the Braves until Monday.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Monday that Chipper Jones (knee) is tentatively scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Class A Rome. He'll serve as the designated hitter on Thursday and Friday before playing third base for a couple games. Jones is eligible to return from the disabled list Sunday, but is likely to rejoin the Braves next Monday.

Chipper Jones (knee) played soft toss Sunday. Jones was able to take 20 right-handed swings off a tee Saturday. He hopes to take live batting practice soon. Chipper wants to get in a couple rehab games before being activated but maintains hope that he'll be ready on July 24, the first day he's eligible. "It depends on how good I feel," Jones said. "If I have absolutely no doubt, no pain and no restrictions, yes I would fly up there. If I have the least little bit doubt in my mind, I'm not quite right yet, I will wait the extra time."

Chipper Jones (knee) was able to take 20 right-handed swings off a tee Saturday. He called his workout "very encouraging." It's a big deal, as Jones' surgically-repaired knee bothers him much more when he's hitting from the right side. He's now hit for two straight days and plans to progress to soft toss on Sunday. Chipper wants to get in a couple rehab games before being activated but maintains hope that he'll be ready on July 24, the first day he's eligible, or July 25. "I'm still looking at that, but I won't know until a couple days beforehand if I'm actually going to hit it or not," Jones said.

Chipper Jones jogged and took his first swings since knee surgery Friday. Jones took 25 swings off a tee left-handed. He also did light sprints, threw and fielded some groundballs. "That's a lot six days post op, but I want to know what I can do," said Jones. "If it's sore tomorrow we'll back off a little bit tomorrow, then go at it again on Sunday." The veteran third baseman is currently aiming to return as soon as July 25.

Chipper Jones (knee) is aiming to return July 25. Jones underwent surgery last weekend to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. He recovered in just 16 days from a similar procedure back in 1996 and is expecting the same recovery time here at the age of 39.

Chipper Jones underwent successful surgery Saturday to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee. The Braves have pegged his timetable at 2-3 weeks, not 3-4 weeks as initially thought. It seems likely, though, that it will be closer to a three-week absence, so he'll probably make it back just before the trade deadline if all goes well. "Hopefully it's short term and we can get him back at a pretty fast time table and be ready to go the last month and a half," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "Instead of keep grinding it out and all of a sudden it becomes worse and we lose him for a month."

Chipper Jones will undergo surgery Saturday afternoon to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee. Not surprisingly, Jones will not travel to Arizona for the All-Star festivities but will instead stay in Atlanta to recuperate from surgery. He's expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks, so a return in early August is likely.

Braves placed 3B Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a right knee meniscus tear. Chipper has decided to go ahead and shut it down and have surgery on the knee, an operation that should take place within the next few days. The procedure is expected to sideline him for 3-4 weeks, so we're probably looking at an early August return if all goes well. The Braves will get Martin Prado (staph infection) back for the start of the second half, and he'll take over for Jones at third base. Brooks Conrad should handle the hot corner over the weekend.
