Kuhl signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Dec. 29.
EDGE Analysis
Kuhl had a rough 2023 season with the Nationals, posting an 8.45 ERA over 38.1 innings prior to being released before midseason. The veteran right-hander is headed to a team desperate for arms, but Kuhl nonetheless figures to start the 2024 season at Triple-A Charlotte.

Kuhl was released by the Nationals on Monday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kuhl passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment Saturday and will now head back into free agency. The 30-year-old right-hander signed a minor-league contract with Washington in February and went on to post a rough 8.45 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 31:28 K:BB across 38.1 major-league innings.

The Nationals designated Kuhl for assignment Saturday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kuhl was lit up for four earned runs over one inning of work during Friday's game against the Padres, and that performance was apparently the last straw for Washington. Kuhl holds an ugly 8.45 ERA and 1.96 WHIP through 38.1 innings this season and will now look to right the ship in the minors.

Kuhl (0-3) took the loss Sunday against the Royals after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out two over 1.2 innings of work.
EDGE Analysis
Kuhl was looking to recreate a similar performance as he had Friday against the Royals after locking down the first save of his career but could not do so. He blew the save in the eighth inning after allowing a game-tying home run to Edward Olivares and then a fielding error in the ninth would lead to the Royals walking things off. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect the late-game appearances to become a trend for Kuhl, who was likely only called upon in that spot because Kyle Finnegan, Hunter Harvey and Carl Edwards had pitched three of the past four days. The 30-year-old owns a 7.90 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 24:17 K:BB over 27.1 innings.

Kuhl gave up a hit and struck out two over 1.2 scoreless innings Friday to record his first save of the season in a 12-10 win over the Royals.
EDGE Analysis
With Kyle Finnegan and Hunter Harvey each having pitched the last two days, and Carl Edwards picking up his 10th hold earlier in the game, Nationals manager Dave Martinez rolled the dice on Kuhl to close out the game. The 30-year-old right-hander got the job done to collect his first career save. It's only his 18th career relief appearance compared to 116 starts, but he appears set to remain in the bullpen for now while the rebuilding club takes a longer look at Jake Irvin in the rotation. Kuhl's 8.06 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 22:17 K:BB through 25.2 innings don't suggest he'll see consistent high-leverage usage, but if he continues to have success in a relief role, he could work his way up the ladder quickly.

Kuhl (foot) was activated off the 15-day injured list Saturday but will pitch out of the bullpen for now, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kuhl struggled to a 9.41 ERA and 18:16 K:BB in five April starts before hitting the injured list at the start of May due to a foot injury. He's ready to pitch again but has lost his rotation spot to Jake Irvin. That move could be temporary, however, as Irvin owns a 5.50 ERA and 15:12 K:BB in four starts. Hobie Harris was optioned to open a roster spot for Kuhl's return.

Kuhl (foot) threw a 65-pitch simulated game Monday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
The four-inning simulated game comes after he completed a 60-pitch simulated game last week. The Nationals will determine Kuhl's next steps based on how he feels coming out of Monday's session. Kuhl has been out all month with right foot metatarsalgia.

Kuhl (foot) threw 60 pitches in a three-inning simulated game Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Nationals manager Dave Martinez told reporters that ideally Kuhl will reach five innings before he's ready to return. The right-hander has struggled to a 9.41 ERA over his five starts with the Nationals, but it does seem likely at this stage he'll return to a rotation spot when ready. When that will be is still up in the air, but it seems likely Kuhl will be ready to roll right around the middle of May.

The Nationals placed Kuhl on the 15-day injured list Monday with right foot metatarsalgia.
EDGE Analysis
Metatarsalgia is discomfort in the ball of the foot. It's not clear how long Kuhl might be sidelined, and with a 9.41 ERA in his first five starts, he's probably not guaranteed a rotation spot once he's deemed ready to return from the IL.

Kuhl (0-2) took the loss against Pittsburgh in the second game of a twin bill Saturday, pitching 3.2 innings during which he gave up eight runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four batters.
EDGE Analysis
Kuhl clearly didn't have his best stuff Saturday, but he was left to eat innings after Washington used five relievers in the first game of the doubleheader. The right-hander threw just 54 of his 100 pitches for a strike and walked four batters for the third time in his past four outings. Kuhl gave up at least one run in each of his frames, and he was finally lifted with two outs in the fourth after allowing five of the final six batters he faced to reach base. Control has been a major issue for Kuhl this season, as he's now recorded an ugly 18:16 K:BB over 22 frames. He may not be long for the rotation if he can't improve upon those numbers or turn around his 9.41 season ERA.
