Smith (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday that manager John Farrell characterized as "surprisingly good," Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith showed good action and velocity, but Farrell tempered his excitement, noting there can be peaks and valleys for pitchers coming back from Tommy John surgery. The timeline for his return hasn't changed; Smith is expected to come back in June.

Smith threw 15-18 pitches off a mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last May, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
Although he's still a ways from returning to live action, but it's good to see the 27-year-old taking the next step in his recovery. Smith will continue to move slowly through the process, and will likely find himself staying back in Florida to face live batters in extended spring training before he enters a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Smith (elbow) will throw off a mound next Monday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last May, Jen McCaffrey of MassLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old Smith has been throwing off flat ground out to 120 feet and is now ready to check the next box in his recovery. He'll throw only fastballs during his first mound work before progressing to his changeup and slider. Once he throws all of his pitches off a mound, Smith will likely stay back in Florida to face live batters in extended spring training followed by a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Smith (elbow) is throwing out to 120 feet and is scheduled to throw off a mound in the next 10-to-14 days, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
EDGE Analysis
Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated earlier this spring that he was shooting for Smith to be on a mound by mid-March, so it looks like he's still on schedule. The conventional wisdom has Smith returning to the majors by June.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Smith (elbow) will likely throw his first bullpen since Tommy John surgery sometime between March 10 and March 15, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
This development seems to be consistent with the expectation that the former eighth-rounder could return sometime in late May or early June, although Mastrodonato speculates that he could return a bit earlier than that. Smith underwent Tommy John surgery on May 24 of last year, but his return date should become clearer as he progresses through his rehab process.

The Red Sox are anticipating a June 1 return date for Smith (elbow), the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham reports.
EDGE Analysis
He had Tommy John surgery on May 24, and as a reliever he could reasonably return roughly 12 months later. Smith probably won't see high-leverage work right away, but could pitch his way into a setup role by July or August.

Smith (forearm) was activated from the 60-day DL on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Although he was activated from the disabled list, there's no timeframe for Smith's eventual return. Smith underwent Tommy John Surgery in May, but has begun throwing activities. A more clear indication as to when he'll be back should be available closer to spring training.

Smith (forearm) will begin throwing in three weeks, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith underwent Tommy John surgery in May, and this would represent the first round of activity since then. The reliever will still likely need to miss a portion of the 2017 season, but if he is indeed able to begin throwing before the end of this season, it will allow the 26-year-old to continue ramping up the activity level as he progresses over the offseason.

Smith (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
The move was essentially a formality, as Smith has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season -- and likely the start of the 2017 season -- after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The transaction clears up a space on Boston's 40-man roster, but there has yet to be a corresponding move.

Smith (forearm) will have Tommy John surgery to reconstruct the UCL in his right elbow.
EDGE Analysis
Smith thought his injury was similar to the flexor strain he suffered during spring training, but it turns out the issue is far more serious this time around. He'll now miss all of 2016 and probably most of 2017, leaving the Red Sox with one less late-inning option. The team still has Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa in front of closer Craig Kimbrel.
