Scott Miller of CBSports.com reports that the Padres are expected to receive a lower-level minor leaguer from the Cubs as compensation for Jed Hoyer taking Chicago's general manager job. The Cubs agreed this week to send right-hander Chris Carpenter and a player to be named later to the Red Sox for a player to be named later in order to resolve compensation for Theo Epstein, but they still have to settle things with the Padres. Miller writes that the issue is expected to be resolved prior to Opening Day.

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, the Padres have tabled contract extension talks with Cameron Maybin. There's no real rush to get something done, as Maybin is currently under team control through 2015. But the Padres would surely like to buy out his arbitration years eventually, and perhaps a season or two of free agency. The fleet-footed center fielder batted just .264/.323/.393 last season, but he stole 40 bases and has emerged as one of the top defenders in all of baseball.

According to Dan Hayes of the North County Times, the Padres are planning to restart contract extension negotiations with outfielder Cameron Maybin in January. Maybin batted just .264/.323/.393 in 568 plate appearances this past season for San Diego, but he stole 40 bases and played superb defense. The Padres will be looking to build around the 24-year-old center fielder. He made just over the league minimum in 2011 but is closing in on arbitration eligibility.

Padres introduced Josh Byrnes as general manager. He replaces Jed Hoyer, who joined Theo Epstein in the new Cubs' front office. Byrnes, who served as senior vice president of baseball operations this season, was general manager of the Diamondbacks when Padres majority owner Jeff Moorad was part-owner of the team.

Cameron Maybin went 2-for-4 with a double and stole his 40th base in Wednesday's season finale against the Cubs. For someone who was dangerously close to taking on the "bust" label, it's a nice way to cap a breakout season. The 24-year-old finally pulled things together in 2012, slashing .264/.323/.393 with 9 HRs, 24 2Bs, 8 3Bs, 40 RBI and 40 SBs over 516 ABs. Not a bad season for someone who was acquired for relievers Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica last November. There's still room for growth here too, as Mr. Maybin can work on improving his 125/44 K/BB mark.

Cameron Maybin tripled and hit a two-run homer on Monday, leading the Padres past the Rockies 8-2. The three-bagger was Maybin's eighth of the season, while the homer was his ninth. Add in his 21 doubles, 37 stolen bases and .269/.326/.400 triple slash, and you have a player that was absolutely stolen from the Marlins for Ryan Webb and Edward Mujica last November. Maybin should be patrolling Petco Park's cavernous center fielder for a long time.

Cameron Maybin doubled, tripled, scored a run and drove in a run in San Diego's 3-1 win over the Giants on Wednesday. He was just 3-for-21 over his past six starts coming into this evening. Now batting .274/.332/.404, the 24-year-old Maybin looks like someone who could be patrolling center field in San Diego for a long time.

Tim Brown of Yahoo reports that there is "two-way sentiment" for a multi-year extension between Cameron Maybin and Padres. It would be a little risky from the Padres' perspective since Maybin experienced little success at the big league level prior to this season. But, he's always been a supremely talented player and appears to finally be figuring things out, batting .275/.332/.400 with eight homers and 34 steals this season while playing terrific defense in center field.

Cameron Maybin returned to action on Monday September 5.
