Cesar Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a two-run double against the Nationals on Wednesday. Batting leadoff, Hernandez swatted a two-run double in the second inning for the only two Phillies runs of the game. The 23-year-old, who was just recalled on Sept. 1, is hitting .256 through 12 games with the big club.

The 23-year-old has had a nice showing offensively at Triple-A this season, hitting .309/.375/.402 with a pair of homers, 34 RBI and 32 stolen bases. He also has the ability to play center field and will likely be utilized in a utility role for the remainder of the season.

The Philadelphia Daily News reports Cesar Hernandez has been optioned to Double-A Reading to get more reps in center field during the All-Star break. Hernandez has been primarily a second baseman with Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, but could be an option to replace Ben Revere (foot) in center field. John Mayberry will continue to get the majority of starts for now. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro is expected to be looking for outfield help at the July 31 trade deadline.
