Ziegler gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to pick up his first save of the season in a 7-6 win over the Nationals.
EDGE Analysis
In his first appearance since being activated from the DL over the weekend, Ziegler notched his first save since last September. The veteran reliever's numbers on the year aren't pretty, but he figures to handle ninth-inning duties for Miami at least until Kyle Barraclough (shoulder) gets healthy and proves he's worth a look in the role.

Ziegler (back) was activated from the disabled list Saturday, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
The timing works out awfully well for Ziegler, as A.J. Ramos was traded to the Mets on Friday and the door is open for Ziegler to slot in right away as the Marlins' closer However, he's not a great bet to hold onto the job the rest of the way. Ziegler struggled to a 6.52 ERA and 1.83 WHIP before going down with the injury and the Marlins will have a capable alternative in Kyle Barraclough (shoulder) once Barraclough returns from the DL.

Ziegler (back) will likely be used as Miami's closer in the short term after he's activated from the DL on Saturday, Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill told the Miami Herald.
EDGE Analysis
The Miami bullpen looks to be in flux after closer A.J. Ramos was traded to the Mets. It looks like Ziegler will get the first shot at save chances, but Drew Steckenrider could also figure into the mix. Kyle Barraclough and Nick Wittgren could also get a shot at the closer role if they are able to return from injuries.

Marlins' President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill said Ziegler (back) will likely be reinstated from the disabled list Saturday, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 37-year-old tossed a scoreless inning for High-A Jupiter on Thursday, his second rehab appearance since being placed on the DL back in June. Ziegler could potentially assume a larger role upon his return to the Miami bullpen, as A.J. Ramos was sent to the Mets on Saturday, though the team would need to overlook his mediocre 6.52 ERA and 1.83 WHIP this season.

Ziegler (back) was assigned Tuesday to the Marlins' rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate to begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Ziegler has been sidelined for the past month with a lower-back strain, putting a damper on what had already been a porous season for the veteran reliever. The 37-year-old had turned in a 6.52 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over 29 innings prior to hitting the 10-day disabled list, but despite his struggles, it sounds like he could still be deployed in a setup role upon his return, according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. He'll likely require multiple rehab appearances from in the minors before being activated, likely at some point in early August.

Ziegler was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a back strain, Andre Fernandez of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
Ziegler is coming off consecutive rough outings that saw him give up seven runs (five earned) over just 1.2 innings of work, so this could have something to do with it. After a strong start to the season, the 37-year-old has seen his ERA balloon to an unsightly 6.52 (across 29 innings). He'll be eligible to return July 1, though it's unclear if he'll need more than the minimum 10-day stay at this point. Junichi Tazawa was reinstated from the disabled list in a corresponding move.

Ziegler has given up 16 runs (15 earned) across 8.2 innings during the month of May.
EDGE Analysis
After an April where he carried a 0.71 ERA and allowed only seven hits over 12.2 innings, Ziegler has completely unraveled. Ziegler's WHIP in May is a massive 3.11, in addition to his 15.58 ERA. Despite maintaining a GB/FB of 2.43 this season, it certainly looks as though the 37-year-old is running out of gas.

Ziegler has allowed one run over seven innings with six strikeouts to begin the season.
EDGE Analysis
Ziegler's success this season isn't too surprising, since he posted a 1.85 ERA and a 2.25 ERA in 2015 and 2016, respectively. In 2017, the 37-year-old boasts a 1.29 ERA. If Ziegler's success continues, there is a chance he can see more action in the setup role, but for now he'll stay in more of a middle-relief role.

Ziegler has yet to make a Grapefruit League appearance this spring as the Marlins attempt to keep NL East hitters from getting a good look at his submarine delivery, The Miami Herald reports. "It's only deceptive to someone that doesn't see it all the time," Ziegler said Thursday. "I'm coming to a new division, and I'm going to be facing new teams more than I ever have in the past, and I'm trying to keep that deception there as long as possible."
EDGE Analysis
The veteran reliever is still getting his work in against minor league hitters on the back diamonds, and Ziegler should eventually find his way into a Grapefruit League game or two, although not against a divisional foe. He's in line to be one of A.J. Ramos' set-up men in 2017, but Ziegler -- who racked up 52 saves over the last two seasons for the Diamondbacks and Red Sox -- could find his way into some ninth inning duty if Ramos falters.

Ziegler agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract with the Marlins on Friday, pending a physical, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Marlins, after missing out on one of the elite closers on the free agent market, have now shelled out a combined $28 million over the past two days to bring in Ziegler and Junichi Tazawa. Ziegler split the 2016 season between Arizona and Boston, posting a 2.25 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 68 innings. The sidearmer boosted his K/9 rate back above 7.5 while maintaining a groundball rate over 63 percent. He's plenty capable of stepping into the closer role should A.J. Ramos falter.
