Gomber allowed two runs on two hits and two walks across 6.1 innings in a no-decision Tuesday against the Reds. He struck out six.
EDGE Analysis
Gomber pitched quite well in his first start with the club, carrying a no-hit shutout into the seventh inning before Eugenio Suarez chased him with a two-run home run. He limited baserunners to great effect and needed an efficient 90 pitches to record his 19 outs. While he posted a mediocre 7.0 K/9 as a reliever, his strikeout total was useful in this start, though it remains to be seen if he can sustain that, should he remain in the rotation. Nevertheless, it was a positive outing for Gomber and he should get another turn in the near future.

Gomber was officially promoted as expected Tuesday and will start against the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
Gomber has appeared 15 times as a reliever for the Cardinals this season but has yet to make a major-league start. His ERA is a respectable 3.77 at the big-league level, though his 10:8 K:BB is not particularly encouraging. He's looked better for Triple-A Memphis, with a 3.42 ERA and a 76:20 K:BB in 68.1 innings. Daniel Poncedeleon was sent down to Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move.

Gomber will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis and start Tuesday's game against the Reds, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Cardinals will break in a pair of rookies in Cincinnati for their first MLB starts, as Gomber will follow 26-year-old Daniel Poncedeleon in the pitching schedule. Carlos Martinez (oblique) is expected to return from the 10-day disabled list over the weekend to bolster the rotation, but one more spot on the Cardinals' five-man staff would still be open for Gomber or Poncedeleon, with the performances of both pitchers earlier in the week likely dictating who sticks around with the big club. Gomber, who has previously made 15 relief appearances for the Cardinals and has collected seven holds, has worked nearly exclusively as a starter at Memphis this season, compiling a 3.42 ERA and 76:20 K:BB In 68.1 innings.

Gomber was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Cardinals needed to clear a spot on the 25-man roster for Paul DeJong (hand), who came off the disabled list, and Gomber was the casualty. Look for the big righty to continue to work as a starter at Triple-A, even though he is more likely to be used as a reliever again if he rejoins the big club.

Gomber, who fired a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in which he allowed a hit during a win over the Brewers on Saturday, now has holds in three straight appearances and seven overall in his first 10 big-league outings.
EDGE Analysis
That's not to say it's all been smooth sailing for the rookie southpaw, who's also given up multiple earned runs on two occasions and has a 4.22 ERA overall. However, Gomber has shown he can hold his own against big-league bats, and manager Mike Matheny hasn't been hesitant to afford him a steady workload. A starter throughout the duration of his minor-league career who's opened 89 games in total, the 24-year-old Gomber would presumably also be capable of sliding into the rotation in a pinch.

Gomber grabbed his first hold in Saturday's win over the Pirates, firing three scoreless innings in which he issued a walk and recorded two strikeouts.
EDGE Analysis
The 24-year-old lefty breezed through his first three big-league frames on an efficient 32 pitches, impressively getting through the heart of the Pirates order unscathed over his first pair of innings while often using his trademark overhand curveball. Gomber had already been up from Triple-A Memphis once earlier this season, but he hadn't logged any appearances. It remains to be seen how long his current stay will last, but manager Mike Matheny emphasized after the game that the Cardinals "want to see what we've got" with the young southpaw, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports, especially considering that left-handed hitters have slugged .520 against same-handed relievers Tyler Lyons and Brett Cecil.

Gomber was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Gomber was recalled from Triple-A at the end of April, but he wound up going unused in the big-league bullpen. He'll return to the minors to resume his normal starting duties, looking to build off the 2.45 ERA he produced in his first four starts for the Redbirds.

The Cardinals recalled Gomber from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
Though he'll assume the active roster spot of fill-in fifth starter Jack Flaherty, who was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move, Gomber isn't expected to assume a rotation spot during his stint with St. Louis. The Cardinals won't be in need of a fifth starter until May 8 against the Twins, at which time Adam Wainwright (elbow) could be ready to come off the 10-day disabled list. If Wainwright isn't ready to go by then, Flaherty would be eligible to return from the minors, so it seems likely that Gomber will just provide St. Louis with a long-relief option in the interim. The 24-year-old, who struck out a career-high 16 batters in his last outing with Memphis, has posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 25.2 innings this season at Triple-A.

Gomber (2-0) racked up a career-high 16 strikeouts and allowed six hits over eight scoreless innings in Triple-A Memphis' 3-0 win over Iowa on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Gomber's whiff total also tied a franchise record for most strikeouts in a single game, Oliver Macklin of MLB.com reports. The promising prospect fired 85 of 112 pitches for strikes while lowering his ERA from 3.57 to 2.45 in what is his first season against Triple-A bats.
