Abbott (1-4) took the loss to the Orioles on Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out eight without issuing a walk.
EDGE Analysis
He retired eight straight batters at one point while showing great depth with his breaking pitches, but Jorge Mateo and Adley Rutschman touched him up for solo shots in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, and that was enough to send Abbott to his fourth loss in five decisions. The lefty has now allowed multiple homers in three of his last four outings, but he still has a highly respectable 3.32 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 38 innings this season. If Abbott can get the homer issue under control, he could take off, though that will be easier said than done as the weather heats up.

Abbott (1-3) was tagged with the loss after he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven in Sunday's 4-3 defeat to the Rangers.
EDGE Analysis
Abbott struggled early, surrendering a pair of two-run home runs in the first inning, including an inside-the-park homer to Wyatt Langford, which gave the Rangers a 4-0 lead. The left-hander was able to settle down after the difficult first frame, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings to end his outing. Abbott entered Sunday having given up two or fewer runs in each of his five starts in 2024, but he'll now carry a 3.27 ERA into his next projected start Saturday at home versus the Orioles.

Abbott did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
After giving up a run in the opening frame, Abbott held the Phillies off the board through his next three innings, allowing just one baserunner. However, he lost the strike zone in the fifth, walking the first three batters to load the bases and ultimately forcing Abbott out of the game before he could qualify for the win. Still, it's been a nice start to the year for 24-year-old lefthander -- Abbott sports a 2.60 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB through his first five starts (27.2 innings). He's currently lined up to face the Rangers on the road Sunday in his next start.

Abbott (1-2) took the loss against the Mariners on Wednesday, surrendering two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings.
EDGE Analysis
Abbott was efficient for most of the afternoon, with the exception of the four-seamers he left out over the plate for Cal Raleigh in the second inning and Mitch Garver in the sixth, both of which would end up in the outfield stands. The young lefty hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his first four starts to open the season and actually fanned a season-high six batters Wednesday, though the two home runs he surrendered also marked a season high. Furthermore, Abbott has now gone at least six innings in each of his last two starts and carries a clean 2.70 ERA following the loss.

Abbott (1-1) allowed a run on four hits over seven innings Friday, striking out three and earning a win over the White Sox.
EDGE Analysis
Abbott coughed up a run in the third inning but otherwise had no trouble working through the White Sox. Friday's outing was his longest of the season to date and he dropped his ERA to 2.60 through 17.1 frames. He tossed 67 of 103 pitches for strikes, though just eight of those strikes were swings-and-misses. Abbott is currently lined up to face the Angels at home next week.

Abbott (0-1) was saddled with the loss Sunday against the Mets, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Abbott allowed one run each in the first (unearned), third and fourth innings, which turned out to be too much for the Reds to overcome. It was not a bad start for the young lefty but also not the type of start that will force the Reds to stick with him. With Nick Lodolo's return looming after making his final rehab start on Sunday, Abbott, who earned the fifth spot in the rotation coming out of spring training thanks in part to Lodolo's injury, may see his time in the rotation, at least for the time being, come to an end.

Abbott did not factor into the decision Monday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Abbott drew a difficult task in his first 2024 start facing the Phillies on the road but escaped relatively unscathed. He settled in and pitched 4.2 scoreless innings after allowing two runs in the first inning on an Alec Bohm double. However, the Reds lefty struggled to avoid contact on his fastball, generating just one whiff despite throwing it 44 times. Abbott is currently scheduled to face the Mets at home in his next start.

Abbott will open the regular season in the Reds' rotation, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
EDGE Analysis
Brandon Williamson is set to miss the first several weeks of the season due to a shoulder injury, meaning Abbott will claim the fifth and final spot of Cincinnati's rotation. Abbott hasn't had a particularly impressive spring, giving up seven earned runs in eight innings, but the 24-year-old southpaw had a successful enough rookie campaign to make it reasonable to think he'll bounce back during the regular season.

Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Abbott is competing with Brandon Williamson (shoulder) for the fifth spot in the rotation, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Frankie Montas, Hunter Greene, Graham Ashcraft and Nick Martinez are locked into the first four rotation spots, leaving Abbott and Williamson to battle for the final slot. It might be only temporary, though, as Nick Lodolo (lower leg) could be ready for his season debut by April 10. Abbott has been roughed up this spring, giving up seven runs on 14 hits and a walk over eight innings. The lefty also faded badly down the stretch last season with a 6.09 ERA in his final 10 starts.

Abbott allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over three innings in Saturday's spring start against the Diamondbacks.
EDGE Analysis
Abbott was supposed to pitch four innings, but manager David Bell pulled him after the pitcher allowed the first batter to reach base in the fourth, according to Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. The left-hander had a second consecutive subpar Cactus League start and overall has given up seven runs and 14 hits over eight spring innings, although that comes with a more reassuring 8:1 K:BB. Despite the results, Bell did not sound worried. "He's still working toward being really sharp like we know he can be," the manager said. "He's going through that normal process in spring training. He came in looking really good and he'll get back there by the end of camp." Abbott added that he's been focusing on inside fastballs to righties during camp and used the word "bad" to describe the execution of those inside fastballs Saturday. He's still in the mix for a rotation spot, but that likely depends on the progress Nick Lodolo (lower leg) makes.
