Claudio has thrown the ball well with his new club this spring, keeping the opposition off the scoreboard four times in five appearances and allowing just two hits and one earned run while posting a 4:1 K:BB. Claudio will be the Brewers' No. 2 left-hander out of the bullpen behind Josh Hader, and figures to be used mainly in the middle-to-late innings as the matchups dictate.

Claudio and the Brewers reached agreement on a one-year, $1.275 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports.

Claudio posted a career-worst 4.48 ERA in 68.1 innings with the Rangers last season, his first year with an ERA north of 3. Acquired by the Brewers in exchange for a draft pick in December, he'll likely fill a lefty specialist or middle relief role.

Claudio will provide Milwaukee with another southpaw out of the bullpen after the team declined to tender contracts to left-handers Dan Jennings and Xavier Cedeno for the upcoming season. Though Claudio took a noticeable step back this past year (4.48 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 5.4 K/9), his previous two seasons in the Rangers' bullpen gave the Brewers enough belief that he'll be able to bounce-back in 2019. In addition, Claudio is under team control for the next three seasons and still has minor-league options remaining should Milwaukee elect to send him down to Triple-A Colorado Springs at any point in the year.

Claudio will be used as the opener Saturday against the Padres followed by primary pitcher Ariel Jurado, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

This will be the third time the Rangers go with an opener and the second time Jurado has been paired with one. The Rangers used an opener Friday, and the plan worked perfectly when Connor Sadzeck opened with a scoreless inning in a 4-0 win. Claudio has some length to him, so he could throw more than just the one inning as the Rangers continue to experiment with the concept of the rest of the season.

Claudio (ankle) was activated off the 10-day disabled list Saturday, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.

Claudio landed on the disabled list with the ankle sprain prior to the All-Star break, and returns having spent the 10-day minimum on the shelf. The 26-year-old has a 4.32 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 41.2 innings this season, and his 12.4-percent strikeout rate leaves a lot to be desired.

He entered the season as a candidate to close games for the Rangers, but Claudio doesn't have the kind of stuff a traditional closer possesses, so he's been relegated to middle relief.

Claudio has a 7.59 ERA with opponents hitting .400 against him through 10.2 innings over 13 games.

Claudio came out of nowhere last season to become the Rangers' closer, but the soft-tossing left-hander has fooled nobody in 2018. He had a minor league option remaining and it could be used as Texas welcomes back Doug Fister (hip) from the disabled list Wednesday and Tony Barnette (shoulder) possibly Friday.

Claudio (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits without getting an out in Saturday's 9-7 loss to the Mariners.

EDGE Analysis

Claudio, who finished up 2017 as the Rangers' closer and was in the mix for the job until the final days of spring training, has allowed crooked numbers in three of his 12 outings and sports an 8.10 ERA. Opposing batters are raking against him, hitting .396 while making hard contact 42 percent of the time. For guys like Claudio, whose fastball velocity lives in the mid 80s -- location is paramount. An inch here or there, and a batter can put a barrel on a slow moving ball.

Claudio recorded the final out of Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Astros to pick up his first save of the season.

EDGE Analysis

Keone Kela worked a scoreless ninth inning to get the win, then Chris Martin came on to get the first two outs in the 10th before Claudio finished things off. The left-hander has stumbled out to a 5.87 ERA through his first eight appearances (7.2 innings) this season, but manager Jeff Banister still seems willing to trust him in high-leverage situations. Don't count Claudio out of the saves mix on days when Kela is unavailable.
