Avila (back) announced Saturday that his injury is minor, but he remains day-to-day, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran catcher told reporters that his back stiffness is common for him during spring training and noted that Saturday's flare-up wasn't as bad as they've been in previous years. He could serve as the DH over the next game or two to help keep him fresh heading into the season.

Avila left Saturday's game with lower back stiffness and he is considered day-to-day, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran catcher's back tightened up on him during the course of Saturday's contest and he had to exit the contest. To make matters worse, Avila has struggled at the dish all spring, collecting just one hit in his first 16 at-bats. Fortunately, his plate discipline has shone through as he's drawn seven walks against 11 strikeouts. There's no indication at this point that Avila's back soreness will put his status for Opening Day in jeopardy.

Manager Robin Ventura said he may use Avila as the team's DH on occasion, the Chicago Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Generally managers avoid starting their catchers in the DH slot, but Ventura said he is confident in the team's emergency options. Right now there is not a clear delineation in playing time between Avila and Dioner Navarro, so getting both some at-bats would be useful.

Avila has just one hit in 16 at-bats in nine Cactus League contests.
EDGE Analysis
On the plus side, he has seven walks, so his on-base percentage exceeds his batting average by 285 points. Avila entered camp in a presumptive platoon with Dioner Navarro, and little has happended in camp to shake that dynamic. It has yet to be established which catcher will catch which pitchers on a regular basis, but the split figures to be somewhat even.

Avila, who looked to have a clear path to playing time after the White Sox did not tender a contract to Tyler Flowers, will likely serve as the team's No. 2 catcher in 2016 after the club signed Dioner Navarro.
EDGE Analysis
Navarro's signing completed the team's offseason overhaul at the catching position. Navarro signed the bigger deal and has a longer track record of offensive success, so he probably jumps to the top of the depth chart, though the left-handed Avila could force a platoon of sorts. It may also shake out that certain White Sox pitchers prefer throwing to one catcher over the other, but those relationships will not materialize until spring training at the earliest.

Avila will rise to the top of the White Sox's depth chart at catcher following the news that the team did not tender a contract to Tyler Flowers.
EDGE Analysis
Flowers had been the team's starting catcher for the past few seasons, but apparently the team wanted to move in a different direction. At this point, it is not clear if Avila will remain the team's top option or if there is another move to be made.

Avila signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the White Sox on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 28-year-old struggled mightily last season for Detroit, hitting just .191 with four home runs, 13 RBI and 66 strikeouts in 67 games. Despite the poor season, the White Sox will take a low-risk chance on Avila, and he figures to team with Tyler Flowers to form Chicago's catching tandem in 2016.

Avila has struggled this season and sits with a .190/.340/.286 slash line and just four home runs, 13 RBI and 21 runs scored in 168 at bats.
EDGE Analysis
James McCann has moved ahead of him on the depth chart and deservedly so. Avila has never been able to replicate his 2011 season where he slugged .506 in 464 at bats and this season has been his absolute worst in his MLB career. He may not even make it onto your fantasy radar for next season.

Avila is out of the lineup Saturday. This is just a standard off day for Avila, who had a five-game hitting streak snapped Friday. James McCann will get the start behind the dish and Marc Krauss will start at first base Saturday for the injured Miguel Cabrera.

Avila is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mariners, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. Avila has started each of the past five games between catcher and first base, but will receive a day off of his own Wednesday. James McCann will start behind the plate, while Jefry Marte will make his first career major league start at first base.
