Cleary announced his retirement Wednesday, TSN reports.
EDGE Analysis
Hailing from Newfoundland, Cleary enjoyed an illustrious NHL career with the bulk of his playing time spent in Detroit, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2008. Cleary produced 165 goals and 222 assists in 938 career games and he also had service time with the Blackhawks, Oilers, and Coyotes. The winger was adept in all three zones, and his relentless style of play fit perfectly with the blue-collar vibe of Motown. Despite signing a one-year deal with AHL Grand Rapids ahead of this most recent season, he didn't end up reporting to the club, which seems rather unfortunate since they just claimed the 2017 Calder Cup.

Cleary signed a one-year deal with the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday, Pete Wallner of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Cleary was brought back onto the Red Wings on a professional tryout agreement (PTO) last week but the organization has now chosen to send him to AHL. The 37-year-old played last year with the Griffins and tallied 15 points over 35 games. Now in his second consecutive year in hockey minors, it seems likely the 10-year Red Wings' veteran may be nearing an end to his NHL career.

Cleary will join the Red Wings on a professional tryout agreement (PTO), Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Cleary's numbers have steadily declined since a career-best 2010-11 campaign, tallying 46, 33, 15, eight, and two points respectively in his last five seasons. Now at 37 years old and a year removed from professional hockey, it seems probably Cleary's role would merely be deep forward depth if he were to get signed longterm.

Cleary will not report to the minors, MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Cleary refused an assignment to AHL Grand Rapids, so it appears the 36-year-old will instead opt for retirement. He signed a one-year deal in September but failed to earn a spot on the NHL roster out of camp. If Cleary does, indeed, opt for retirement, his entire salary for the season ($950,000) will not count against the cap.

Clearly cleared waivers Thursday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Wings are not sure if Cleary will report to AHL Grand Rapids, but in any event, he will not join the team for their season-opening trip in California. The 36-year-old winger, who played in just 17 games with the Wings last season, may be seriously considering retirement following this latest development.

Cleary was placed on waivers Wednesday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 36-year-old has spent the last 10 seasons with the Red Wings. However, he played in just 17 games last season, scoring one goal and one assist during that time. It's unclear what the next step is for the veteran forward who's lost more than one step over the past few years.

Cleary is expected to play Saturday in Boston, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Cleary has a reduced role with the Wings sending a younger field of talent on the ice these days. He's a veteran part-timer that should put his leadership hat on for that inexperienced group. Cleary pitched in just two points last year.

Cleary signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings on Friday, Stephen Whyno of The Canadian Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran Cleary didn't see a ton of action with the Red Wings last season, playing just 17 games due to some knee issues. He'll give it another go in 2015-16, however, with perhaps another offseason helping with the knee problem.

Cleary is expected to play Monday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. With Joakim Andersson (illness) a late scratch, Cleary will be available as the center's replacement. Cleary has not played in nearly a month and has two points and two penalty minutes in only 12 appearances this season.
