Gordon will sit out Tuesday's game against the Sharks with a back issue, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports. Though Gordon's injury hurts the Oilers' depth in their bottom-six, the club will be fortunate to welcome back Matt Hendricks (leg) into the lineup following a four-game absence. The extent of Gordon's injury remains unknown at this time, so he could potentially be a lineup option for Wednesday's game against the Ducks.

Gordon scored a shorthanded goal and finished plus-1 in Tuesday's loss to Dallas. Gordon doesn't produce much offense, but he is good for about one shortie per year. With four goals in 22 games this season, Gordon's well ahead of his typical scoring pace, which says a lot about his offensive abilities.

Gordon netted the game-winning goal Friday against the Sabres. The goal came late in the third period off a brilliant pass from Teddy Purcell. Gordon has now scored in two straight games and is up to four points in 14 games on the season. Don't read too much into this recent streak, as the fourth-liner won't keep it up and has never surpassed 29 points in a season.

Gordon scored his first goal of the season in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Bruins. Gordon staked the Oilers to an early lead with a first-period power-play goal, but was otherwise quiet during his 27 shifts, aside from winning 13 of 26 face-offs. Locked into a bottom-six role for the Oilers this season, Gordon will struggle to contribute points with much regularity.

Gordon is expected to serve as the Oilers' No. 3 center to begin the season, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reports. Though filling the hole at the second-line center spot is the more pressing need for the Oilers, it appears that rookie Leon Draisaitl or Mark Arcobello will be given the opportunity to do so before Gordon does. Gordon is serviceable two-way depth center for the Oilers, but he doesn't offer enough offensive upside to keep up with the likes of David Perron and Nail Yakupov on the wings. Look for Gordon to finish with another season where he hovers around the 20-point mark.

Boyd Gordon was caught off guard when he was given credit for Edmonton's shorthanded goal on Sunday. The goal was the result of Patrick Kane accidentally scoring on his own net in an attempt to pass the puck back to the puck while Chicago's goalie was pulled due to a delayed penalty call. Gordon was on the bench when Kane scored, but he was determined to be the last Oilers' player to have possession of the puck. "I didn't hear them announce it. I wasn't paying attention, then Hemmer (Ales Hemsky) said 'hey, they gave the goal to you.' It still doesn't make any sense," said Gordon. "I thought they screwed it up and they were going to give it to (Mark) Arcobello. I also thought Marty (Marincin) might have touched it." Nevertheless it was Gordon's eighth marker of 2013-14.

Boyd Gordon was credited with a shorthanded goal on Sunday. The Oilers were shorthanded when Devan Dubnyk slashed Andrew Shaw in the second period. The Blackhawks were in possession of the puck and pulled the goalie for an extra attacker. Patrick Kane then passed the puck back to the point, except there was no one there and the puck traveled 200 feet into the empty cage. Gordon was credited with the goal, his eighth of the season tying a career high, and first shorthanded goal of the season.
