DeCoud was released by the Panthers on Tuesday.A one-time Pro Bowler with the Falcons, DeCoud struggled in his first season as a Panther, eventually ceding most of his snaps to rookie Tre Boston, who held up well in an expanded role. Boston will likely open 2015 as Carolina's starting free safety, while DeCoud will hope to generate interest as a potential starter in free agency.

DeCoud (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game versus the Saints, the Panthers' official site reports. DeCoud's limited showing in practice Wednesday provides a glimmer of hope for active status on a short week. Still, he's averaging just four tackles per game to go with one interception this season, which tempers his potential in IDP formats. If he's unable to take the field, Colin Jones is the likely candidate to cover free safety in place of DeCoud.

DeCoud (hamstring) is not practicing Tuesday, the Charlotte Observer reports. DeCoud has played through a lingering hamstring issue recently, but with the Panthers' next game already coming on Thursday, the safety may miss his first contest of the season. Considering DeCoud's situation, Carolina activated fellow safety Robert Lester from their practice squad Tuesday.

Panthers agreed to terms with S Thomas DeCoud, formerly of the Falcons, on a two-year contract. The deal is worth up to $3.75 million, and includes a $500,000 signing bonus. DeCoud will start out as the Panthers' No. 3 safety behind Roman Harper and Charles Godfrey, but will see plenty of snaps regardless of his depth-chart position. Godfrey is coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, and expected to spend time in the slot. Now 29, DeCoud graded out as one of the four worst safeties in the league in Pro Football Focus' ratings last season, and was similarly ineffective in 2012. The Panthers' front seven has a way of making defensive backs look better, however.

Free agent FS Thomas DeCoud is still negotiating with the Panthers, but a deal is not imminent. DeCoud has found a soft market since getting dumped by the Falcons in early March, so he may be using the Panthers' interest to press the issue with other safety needy teams. Carolina is after bargain depth to shore up a safety corps led by the aging Roman Harper and Charles Godfrey, who is coming off an Achilles' tear last season.
