The player rep for Ryan Grant indicated the free agent canceled his visit to the Lions over "economic issues." Grant's agent said last week that the Lions had an offer on the table. If that is indeed the case, Grant was unimpressed with the particulars. The cap-strapped Lions were believed to be just $5 million over the salary cap with a full draft class yet to sign. We doubt they were offering Grant much in the way of guaranteed money.

Updating several previous items, free agent Ryan Grant never did meet with the Lions as reported on Monday. A Lions official disputed a report that Grant was ever scheduled to visit the club. The source for the initial report was Grant's agent. The Detroit Free Press attempted to contact Grant's agent on Monday, but their calls were not returned. The initial story last week claimed that the Lions had a contract offer on the table for Grant, and we'd now be forced to question that.

ESPN Milwaukee reports free agent RB Ryan Grant is mulling an offer from the Lions. Grant has already visited the Patriots and is believed to have received an offer from them as well. We're skeptical that there would be much guaranteed money and a secure roster spot from either organization. At this stage of his career, Grant is merely veteran insurance in case the teams' top options fail to develop or remain sidelined by injuries.

The Contra Costa Times believes the Raiders may be more interested in free agent Ryan Grant than free agent Cedric Benson. ESPN's John Clayton reported Tuesday that Benson was "hoping" to latch on with the Raiders. Both veteran runners have been greeted by dead markets, but Grant did at least earn a visit to New England last month. Each appeared to be running on fumes last season, though Benson did manage to go over 1,000 rushing yards for the third straight year while proving typically durable. Grant played better down the stretch after getting off to a slow start. Either would provide cheap, veteran insurance behind the injury prone Darren McFadden.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Packers have told free agent Ryan Grant "they have an interest in bringing him back." However, the Packers haven't been in a hurry to get a deal done, and the Journal-Sentinel believes what they do on draft day will decide Grant's Green Bay future. James Starks, Brandon Saine and Alex Green all have question marks, but aside from loyalty, the Pack lack a compelling reason to re-sign Grant.

The Patriots hosted free agents Ryan Grant and Tim Hightower Friday, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter. Perhaps the Patriots aren't ready to ride with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead as their primary backs after all. Grant is 29, isn't a receiver out of the backfield and has no speed left, but the Patriots have taken low-risk gambles like this before. Hightower was acting as the Redskins lead back last season before tearing his ACL in Week 7.

The player rep for Ryan Grant suggests the free agent could have a new team "as early as next week." Grant has interest from at least one team, although it's not clear just how strong that interest is. Asked if there was a chance Grant would play outside of Green Bay in 2012, the agent replied, "That's a strong possibility, more than a strong possibility." We wouldn't expect a guaranteed roster spot for the 29-year-old no matter where he lands.

The player rep for Ryan Grant confirms the free agent will hit the open market. The Packers have informed Grant of their interest in bringing him back, but they won't make an offer until he shops his services around first. The agent predictably expects a "market" for Grant, though we suspect there will be a chilly reception for a 29-year-old lacking in receiving ability, break-away speed, and pass protection.

Coach Mike McCarthy "hopes" to have free agent Ryan Grant back in 2012. The Packers will let Grant establish his own market in free agency after failing to show any semblance of play-making ability for the majority of the season. Chances are the 29-year-old will return to Green Bay on a modest short-term contract.
