Coach Mike McCarthy revealed Monday that Ryan Grant suffered a bruised kidney in Sunday's win over the Bears. McCarthy provided no details on Grant's Week 4 status other than to say he'll know more when the Packers resume practicing Wednesday. Green Bay faces the Broncos next. Grant broke out of an early-season slump to rack up 92 yards on 17 Week 3 carries, severely outplaying James Starks. If Grant is unable to play next Sunday, Starks would rise back into the RB2 range. Early indications remain that Grant should not miss game action.

Ryan Grant carried six times for 25 yards and caught three passes for 14 yards in the Packers' Week 2 win over Carolina. Grant has yet to exceed 10 touches in a game through two weeks. While he's likely to remain involved as a complementary back for the foreseeable future, Grant won't be start-able barring injury to James Starks. Even then, the Packers might see fit to give Alex Green a big playing-time bump. Going on age 29, Grant continues to look like a back whose best years are behind him.

Ryan Grant rushed nine times for 40 yards and added one reception for five yards against the Saints in the season opener. Grant started the game, but his snaps decreased progressively as it became obvious that James Starks was a superior option. Grant did have once nice cut-back run, but the takeaway is that the 28-year-old is a step slower this season than he was as a featured back in 2009. His role is going to be de-emphasized in favor of Starks. Even in an attractive matchup against Carolina next week, Grant isn't a recommended fantasy play.

Ryan Grant rushed for 16 yards on six carries and caught a six-yard pass in the Packers' third preseason game Friday night. The Packers used Grant on their first, third, and fourth possessions of the first half, while James Starks (1-2, 5-38) handled the second and fifth. Starks had more explosive plays, including a 15-yard gain out of the backfield, but this remains a rotational backfield until proven otherwise. We'd prefer drafting Starks in the eighth or ninth round over Grant in the fifth or sixth.

According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Ryan Grant "hasn't looked like his old self" in training camp. Silverstein's colleague, Tyler Dunne, had a similar take Thursday, stating that Grant has been outplayed by James Starks. Though Grant can still pound it between the tackles, his pre-injury burst hasn't been there this summer. In fact, Silverstein suggests rookie Alex Green is "right on his heels." It's time to move Grant down draft boards with Starks and Green moving up.

Updating a previous item, the Packers agreed to guarantee Ryan Grant's 2011 base salary when they reworked his contract earlier in camp. This will lock Grant into a roster spot. Though his cost moved from $3.5 million to $2.5 million, the Packers aren't going to cut ties with a player guaranteed that much money. The $1 million slash was agreed upon by the Packers in order to use toward RG Josh Sitton and TE Jermichael Finley's likely forthcoming extensions. Grant remains the favorite for carries in Green Bay, but a possession-by-possession rotation with James Starks is a looming possibility.

Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reports that Ryan Grant took a $1 million pay cut to stay with the Packers earlier in training camp. Grant's salary was slashed from $3.5 million to $2.5 million, and it's believed he didn't receive a bonus in exchange for the reduction (as is often the case in these situations). The move trimmed Grant's cap number from $5.65 million to $3.87 million. A Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report Wednesday morning suggested Grant's roster spot still isn't secure. We'll believe it when we see it, but James Starks is looking like a more appetizing fantasy pick.

Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin insists that Ryan Grant's burst is back. Grant is coming off a torn ligament in his ankle and a fracture near his knee, so it's fair to wonder if he can return to form. "I swear ... I don't think he looks any different," Philbin said. "He looks like Ryan to me." As long as Grant stays healthy, we're expecting him to hold off James Starks and play the feature back role on early downs.
