Kellen Winslow will skip practice every Wednesday this season. It's a plan designed to manage Winslow's chronically pained right knee. He'll be ready to rock against the Bucs this week, but isn't even a strong TE2 as he shares time with Jeff Cumberland.

Kellen Winslow had four catches for 35 yards in Saturday night's preseason game. Winslow split playing time with Jeff Cumberland in the first-team offense and was targeted six times in the passing game. He now has seven receptions for 76 yards through three preseason games and will continue to push Cumberland for the starting job.

The Jets have "rationed" Kellen Winslow's training camp reps in an effort to manage his troublesome knees. Winslow, 30, has undergone countless knee surgeries and at best would help the team as a situational role player. Jeff Cumberland is still expected to be the Jets' starting tight end. Winslow could earn snaps on obvious passing downs.

ESPN New York considers Kellen Winslow a "long shot" for an "amazing" comeback. Winslow only has to beat out plodding Jeff Cumberland for the starting tight end job, but it would be a major surprise if his balky knees cooperate. Winslow appeared in just one game last year and will have his reps monitored during training camp. If he can contribute a little on passing downs come the regular season, the Jets should consider it a success.

Jets tight end Kellen Winslow said his goal is to have 100 receptions this season. Dustin Keller, a former favorite target of quarterback Mark Sanchez, never caught more than 65 balls in a season. As the second tight end behind Jeff Cumberland, Winslow won't sniff half of the 100 balls he hopes to catch. The 30-year-old is also expected to be given at least one day off per week in an attempt to preserve the health of his knee.

Kellen Winslow's one-year contract with the Jets is worth $840,000 and contains no guaranteed money. Winslow didn't even get a signing bonus. It's a reminder that although he's the most talented tight end on the roster, he's not a lock to make the final 53. Winslow must prove that his knees can survive a full training camp.

A rival executive says new Jets TE Kellen Winslow's situation is a "lot like (David Garrard's)."

Jets signed TE Kellen Winslow to a one-year contract. 30 years old next month, Winslow by all accounts impressed at his tryout at Jets minicamp and couldn't have picked a better landing spot for playing-time opportunities. Current starter Jeff Cumberland is a lumbering, stiff upright tight end and No. 2 TE Hayden Smith is a converted rugby player. There's a real chance Winslow will wind up starting for the Jets, although we wouldn't expect much of a fantasy impact. Purely a possession receiver at this point in his career, Winslow appeared in one game in 2012, catching one pass for 12 yards. He is a shell of the seam-stretcher and vertical threat he once was.

The Jets will reportedly try to sign free agent TE Kellen Winslow following this week's minicamp. If Winslow's balky knees can hold up for a couple more days, he's going to get an offer. He's impressed during his tryout and is obviously a massive talent upgrade on current starting tight end Jeff Cumberland. The question is if Winslow can sustain health.

Free agent Kellen Winslow will try out for the Jets at their minicamp next week. Winslow, 30 next month, reportedly drew some interest from the Raiders earlier in the offseason, and the veteran also said the Panthers and Browns were poking around on him. The former No. 6 overall pick was on the street for much of 2012. Winslow caught one pass for 12 yards in one game with the Patriots.
