Mays officially signed with the Jets on Monday, NJ.com reports. Mays missed the early half of last season with the Chiefs due to a wrist injury, limiting him to just 20 tackles through eight games played. Now with the Jets, Mays will be on his fifth team since being drafted in 2008. With New York also inking fellow inside linebackers Jamari Lattimore and Erin Henderson this offseason with back-up jobs in mind, the 29-year-old Mays joins them in competing for snaps behind starters David Harris and Demario Davis.

Mays was released by the Chiefs on Thursday, ESPN's Adam Teicher reports. Mays injured his wrist during the 2014 preseason and subsequently spent the first eight games of the year on IR-designated to return. He was expected to start upon making his return, but that didn't come to fruition until late in the season, and even then Mays wasn't an every-down player. The Chiefs hope to have Derrick Johnson (Achilles) back in 2015, with the other starting inside linebacker spot likely manned by Josh Mauga. Mays has already played for four different teams through six seasons, and his best-case scenario for 2015 is the opportunity to compete for a starting job.

Mays was activated from injured reserve Saturday. Jerry Franklin was waived in a corresponding move. Mays, a sixth-round pick in 2008, was placed on IR with a designation to return after undergoing wrist surgery in late August. He recorded 67 tackles (42 solo) and a sack last season in his lone year with the Texans, but he'll likely play limited snaps behind Josh Mauga, at least in his first few games back.

Coach Andy Reid said Mays (wrist) isn't ready to return to practice despite being eligible, the team's official site reports. Mays broke his wrist during training camp and was placed on IR-R. With Derrick Johnson already lost for the season to a torn achilles, the Chiefs have been thin at inside linebacker. It appears they will have to get by for at least a little while longer, as it seems Mays is still a ways out from returning.

Mays (wrist) was placed on injured reserve/designated-to-return Tuesday, Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star reports. Mays was expected to start at inside linebacker this season, but the latest injury will keep him out of that spot for at least a portion of the season. James-Michael Johnson and Josh Mauga are the likely beneficiaries of the playing time voided by Mays' injury.

Mays (wrist) will likely miss at least six weeks following surgery on his wrist, ESPN reports. Mays was set to start at inside linebacker along with Derrick Johnson but the latest setback will keep him out of the starting gig for a while. The injury will probably open up playing time for James-Michael Johnson and Josh Mauga on the inside.

Mays is expected to ungergo wrist surgery within the next 24 hours, ESPN.com reports. Mays, who was viewed as the leading candidate to start at inside linebacker for the Chiefs opposite Derrick Johnson, is thus out indefinitely and off the IDP radar for the time being.

Mays (wrist) did not practice Tuesday, ESPN reports. Mays exited Sunday's preseason game against the Panthers with a wrist injury and wasn't able to return. He was held out of practice Tuesday, but the extent of the injury still hasn't been released. The status of Mays--who is listed as a starting inside linebacker for the Chiefs--for Saturday's game against the Vikings is still unclear. In 14 games with the Texans last season, he recorded 67 tackles and a sack.

Chiefs signed ILB Joe Mays, formerly of the Texans, to a two-year, $6 million contract. Mays, 29 in July, is a two-down run-stopping inside 'backer. He'll be given the first crack at the starting job next to ILB Derrick Johnson in the middle of the Chiefs' 3-4 defense, though second-year ILB Nico Johnson has a similar skill set. Mays registered 67 tackles in 13 starts for the Texans last season.
