Monday Night Takeaways -- Week 15 fantasysharks.com Tue 12/18/12 4:00 AM

Tennessee 14, New York Jets 10 Tennessee Watching the rapid development of so many rookie quarterbacks around the NFL, it's tough to watch the inaccuracy and poor decision making of second-year player Jake Locker. Of course, no one is starting Locker deep in the fantasy playoffs, but his shortcomings are killing the value of all Titans wide receivers, including Kenny Britt. Best to avoid any Titan not named Chris Johnson. New York Jets In a must-win situation, Mark Sanchez's horrid season continued on Monday night tossing 131 yards, one touchdown, four interceptions and a fumble. I'd be willing to bet my left chestnut Tim Tebow will be the Jets starting quarterback next week. Tuesday Morning Quick Hits • LeSean McCoy has been medically cleared to play, but coach Andy Reid was non-committal on the availability to his feature running back. Early indications suggest McCoy will sit. • Jordy Nelson is close to returning, but can we trust him with our season on the line? I'd be looking for a Plan B. • Ahmad Bradshaw is claiming he'll be ready for next week. If so, our crystal ball would suggest a 60-40 timeshare between he and David Wilson. • Danny Amendola emerged from Sunday's game without a setback to his injured heel. He is a high-end WR3 facing the league's worst Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary. • Daniel Thomas sustained a knee injury against Jacksonville. Reggie Bush would have mid-RB2 value as the Miami Dolphins' lead back playing the pedestrian Buffalo rush defense. • Dez Bryant says the finger "feels fine." If he starts for the Dallas Cowboys, he starts on our fantasy team. • Torrey Smith's concussion doesn't appear to be serious. Smith should be suiting up in favorable matchup against the New York Giants secondary. • With Kirk Cousins playing at a high level against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, my gut is telling me the Washington Redskins will give Robert Griffin III a second week of rest playing a very beatable Philadelphia team.

Rock And A Hard Place - Week 14 fantasysharks.com Fri 12/7/12 10:00 AM

Below, I'll list the player, their week 14 matchup, and the percentage of leagues in which he is owned according to our friends at fleaflicker.com. DISCLAIMER: The hope is that you don't find yourself in a situation like this. The hope is that you dodge the bullet. But hope won't help you come Sunday. Let's move on to this week's targets, keeping in mind that these aren't every week starters. Instead, these are guys that should only be used if you're in some kind of roster emergency, whether it be related to bye weeks or injuries. QB Brandon Weeden vs KC -- 22%. Weeden has been better than you'd thing, especially lately. Last week against Oakland, Weeden threw for 364 yards. While he threw just one touchdown to two interceptions, he's starting to make defenses pay when they attempt to load up against Trent Richardson. The Chiefs seem to give up 20+ points every week to opposing quarterbacks, and with Weeden improving, I like him even better in the dog pound in Cleveland. The FantasySharks.com staff has projected him for 250 yards and a score, and I like him to surpass those conservative numbers. Colin Kaepernick vs MIA -- 42%. Kaepernick had a hiccup last week against a beatable Rams defense. I suppose it's to be expected for a young quarterback, although I'm not happy with how much he struggled against a fairly average pass defense, I still like him as he's leading a competent offense. Add to it his rushing ability and goal line potential, and there's a lot to be optimistic about. If you're looking for a fill-in or need a better option or matchup, the Fantasy Sharks staff projects 215 yards passing, 40 yards rushing, and two scores (one rushing). RB Bilal Powell @JAC -- 10%. Powell and running mate Shonn Greene are now splitting carries. With Mark Sanchez inexplicably still under center, the two backs will get plenty of work against Jacksonville's porous run defense. While Greene is still probably a slightly better option, I do like Powell quite a bit. He'll get enough work to be productive, and the Jaguars have given up plenty of yards on the ground. I like him to reach the 60 yards and touchdown projected on our site. Montell Owens vs NYJ -- 4%. Who? I know. Look, our site even states that even without Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings active, Owens is still a desperation play at best. That said, he'll start at running back for the Jaguars against a Jets defense that has struggled all season against the run. Last week was only ...

Week 11: Quarterback Dilemma fantasysharks.com Fri 11/16/12 6:00 AM1 Comment

It's week 11 and the final week with teams on a bye. It was a tough week for quarterbacks as we saw Ben Roethlisberger go down with a shoulder and rib injury. Michael Vick, Alex Smith and Jay Cutler all suffered concussions. Then there are the guys that are still banged up such as Robert Griffin's ribs, Jake Locker's shoulder and Eli Mannings' "tired arm." I have owners in my leagues that lost both their starter and back-up in the same week. Smith and Cutler may have a chance to start this week so keep an eye on their status leading up to Sunday. If you're in this situation, where you are dealing with an injury at the quarterback position, you have to assess what your options are. I'm sure that you will get bombarded with trade offers from every owner that has a backup they can drop. You'll see crazy offers such as Christian Ponder for Arian Foster or Russell Wilson for A.J. Green. Don't take those deals. You're better off picking up the backup to the injured starter such as Nick Foles or Jason Campbell. Depending on your league size, there may be other starters still on the waiver wire such as Sam Bradford or John Skelton. When the waiver wire is your only option, keep in mind who has priority over you and which owners are in your position. Chances are there are two or three owners in the same situation or still have a bye week need to fill. If all four quarterbacks missed this week's game and your backup has a bye, then that will be eight quarterbacks that will be unavailable. The situation is even worse when you play in a 14 or 16 team league or in leagues that start two quarterbacks. So once you've made a decision on what your best option is, you need to think about what you are going to do with your quarterbacks. The playoffs are coming soon and some leagues have waiver deadlines. The question becomes, do you hold on to three quarterbacks or do you drop Roethlisberger or Vick? It's a tough question as we don't know how much time they will miss. You could keep all the quarterbacks but then that leaves you short at another position where you can add depth for the playoffs. You can also drop the injured quarterback but then what if they came back and play? No easy answer and you will need to decide based on what players you have. Teams off week 11: Vikings, Giants, Seahawks, Titans The Golden Mug Award Awarded to the fantasy players who came through for their team. Calvin Johnson- 12 receptions for 207 yards and 1 touchdown. Johnson owners rejoiced ...

Fantasy 411 - Week 11 fantasysharks.com Tue 11/13/12 5:00 AM

Beaten and Battered One look at the leading news from fantasy football this week and you can't help but notice the large amount of injuries that took place. Even worse, many of the injuries that occurred were to quarterbacks. Given that each team only uses one quarterback (sorry, New York Jets fans), there are a precious few options out there for teams who find themselves limping at this pivotal position. Here is a look at the injuries and what I think about the possible fill-ins. For years, fantasy pundits have warned that Michael Vick was a high injury risk due to his reckless style of play. After nine weeks of inflicting pain on owners with inconsistency and turnovers, Vick left Sunday's game with what is being described as "a pretty significant concussion." For some owners, the definitiveness of the injury will be a blessing as it allows them to bench Vick and consider other options. Rookie Nick Foles is slated to get his first start after an impressive preseason. Filling in for Vick against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Foles threw for 219 yards and a touchdown. He added an interception and fumble for good measure. In his first start, Foles will face off with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins are one of the weaker fantasy defenses against quarterbacks, so Foles could be a decent one week fill-in if your normal starter is banged up or on a bye (Christian Ponder, Eli Manning, Russell Wilson, Jake Locker). For the long haul, you should expect Foles to perform like the typical rookie signal caller with a lot of inconsistency. Two other concussed quarterbacks may be prepping their understudies for a Monday night matchup that could quickly turn in to a defensive battle. Alex Smith and Jay Cutler also took hard hits that lead them to being sidelined. Jason Campbell would fill-in for Cutler if he is unable to go. Campbell has started before in the NFL and figures to be a quick study for the Chicago Bears' offensive game plan. Despite his experience, Campbell is not a solid option to lead your fantasy team. Campbell was uninspiring Sunday night against the Houston Texans, and there is a reason that other teams elected to go other directions at the quarterback position. In San Francisco, Smith was replaced by Colin Kaepernick, who ran for more yards than he passed. Kaepernick is an athletic quarterback who has the ability to extend plays with his feet. Given the Bears' talented and equally athletic defense, Kaepernick may be forced to run more for ...

Start/Bench - Week 10 fantasysharks.com Wed 11/7/12 12:00 PM

Welcome to Week 10! We've got a lot in store for you this week including a new addition to the 'Studs' list and a deep sleeper 'Start' at wide receiver. Let's take a break from all the election coverage and do something we can all agree on...checkout this week's Start/Bench. QUARTERBACKS STUDS Tom Brady Drew Brees Robert Griffin III *Bye* Eli Manning Peyton Manning Aaron Rodgers *Bye* Ben Roethlisberger Matt Ryan START Ryan Tannehill, Miami vs. Tennessee: Lost in Andrew Luck's record setting day of 433 passing yards in Week 9 is the fact that Tannehill passed for 290 yards and one touchdown. It was the fourth game in a row in which Tannehill did not turn the ball over. This week he'll be facing a Tennessee defense that is the third most generous versus opposing quarterbacks in fantasy having allowed two-or-more touchdown passes in seven of nine games played this year. The Titans have allowed 20 touchdowns passes on the season while only picking off six. Jake Locker, Tennessee at Miami: Locker, who has been cleared to practice this week, is coming off an injury to his non-throwing shoulder and could be ready to start should he prove healthy enough this week in practice. The Titans will be facing a Colts defense that has allowed 14 touchdown passes on the season while only recording two interceptions. With Kenny Britt back healthy and Chris Johnson running like the CJ of old there is plenty of fire power in this Titans offense. But remember to check back throughout the week as we'll be awaiting the green light from Titans head coach Mike Munchak for Locker to start. Joe Flacco, Baltimore vs. Oakland: Flacco has been downright unimpressive over his last four games having thrown for under 200 yards on three occasions while throwing only three touchdown passes over that span. But a matchup versus a Raiders defense that has allowed 14 touchdown passes on the season while only picking off five passes could be just what the doctor ordered. Those five interceptions have come in just two games as they had three versus Atlanta and two versus Kansas City. Opposing quarterbacks have scored double-digit fantasy points in seven out of eight games versus the Raiders this season. BENCH Carson Palmer, Oakland at Baltimore: Coming off of his massive performance in Week 9, where he threw for 414 yards and four touchdowns, it's going to be real hard to sit Palmer this week. But he'll be facing a Ravens defense that is the thrid toughest versus ...

Rock And A Hard Place - Week 8 fantasysharks.com Fri 10/26/12 9:00 AM

Four teams are on a bye in Week 8: Baltimore, Buffalo, Cincinnati, and Houston. Between those four teams, we have four starting caliber quarterbacks and several viable running backs, receivers, and tight ends. Then there's DeMarco Murray, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Greg Jennings who are hurt, with many others questionable. Below, I'll list the player, their Week 8 matchup, and the percentage of leagues in which he is owned according to our friends at fleaflicker.com. QB Sam Bradford vs NE -- 41%. Bradford has been a litmus test for passing defenses. His performance is indicative of his opposition. Against Chicago and Seattle, he really struggled. Against Washington and Miami, he played very well. New England has been giving up points to opposing quarterbacks in bunches, so I expect Bradford to put up solid numbers. While I don't know about the 270 yards and three touchdowns we've projected for him, something like 250 and two scores should do just fine. Matt Hasselbeck vs IND -- 16%. Hasselbeck has filled in admirably for injured starter Jake Locker. He's put up enough points to warrant being a decent second stringer or a bye week fill-in. Over the past few weeks, the Titans have actually been scoring a bit, and Hasselbeck has been careful with the football. I think he surpasses the 230 yards and a touchdown in our projections. RB Jonathan Dwyer vs WAS -- 42%. Dwyer finally displayed some of the running skills we'd seen back in college, leading Ben Roethlisberger to even compare him to former Steelers' running back Jerome Bettis. He ran hard, seeming to get stronger as the game progressed, breaking off a 32-yard run to seal the deal late. I'm a big fan of his, and with Rashard Mendenhall and Isaac Redman still slowed by injury, look for Dwyer to get another start this week. Despite the Redskins tough run defense, I like him to outperform our 75-yard projection. Daryl Richardson vs NE -- 30%. Richardson has been a pleasant surprise in St. Louis. While Steven Jackson is still very productive, Richardson has been cutting into his touches. Jackson will end up the goal ...

Week 6 Fantasy Headlines: · Some Fantasy Studs Showed Up, Some Didn't · Aaron Rodgers Carves Up Texans With Six TD Passes · Shonn Greene Ground-and-Pounds the Colts · A Long Overdue Breakout Game From Dez Bryant · Russell Wilson Upends Patriots With Last-Minute TD Pass · Bradshaw, Giants Pound The 49ers at Candlestick · Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson Rescue the Lions · RGIII Shreds Vikings Defense GAME SUMMARIES & FANTASY COMMENTARY: Bye week: Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars & New Orleans Saints Thursday Night Game: Tennessee Titans 26 (2-4) | Pittsburgh Steelers 23 (2-3) Fantasy Focus -- Titans: Welcome back, Kenny Britt (4-62-1 on 11 targets). Sure, he dropped a few passes -- blame that on rust -- but Britt is obviously ready to be used as a regular fantasy starter again. The 37-year-old Matt Hasselbeck (25/44 for 290-1-1) doesn't have a big arm anymore, but he still can play competently. Kendall Wright (6-71-0 on eight targets) topped all Titans receivers in this contest. The rookie has scored in two of his last three games. Nate Washington (3-57-0 on 10 targets) still hasn't caught more than three passes in a game so far this season. Despite the favorable matchup for Jared Cook (4-54-0 on four targets) he was a non-factor, salvaging his fantasy outing with a 25-yard catch late in the game. The enigmatic Chris Johnson (19-91-0 rushing and 4-23-0 receiving) logged his second-best rushing game of the season against what had been billed as a good Pittsburgh Steelers run defense. Fantasy Tips: Jake Locker (shoulder) could return next week. Although Locker has favored Washington in the past, don't let that scare you away from playing Britt. His presence should draw the attention of the top cover corners on opposing defenses and open things up for Washington and Cook, so don't give up on either player yet. Wright produces solid numbers with either quarterback under center; he has caught five or more passes in five of six games played. Johnson is a difficult player to read. He struggles in the easy matchups but produces in the tougher ones. Fantasy Focus -- Steelers: After breathing some much-needed life into Pittsburgh's anemic ground game last week with his 14-81-1 effort, Rashard Mendenhall (6-6-0 rushing and 1-11-0 receiving) went down early with an Achilles' tendon injury. Isaac Redman (5-14-0 rushing and 4-105-0 receiving) left in the third quarter because of an ankle injury. Ben Roethlisberger (24/40 ...

Against the Odds - Week 6 (Thursday Edition) fantasysharks.com Thu 10/11/12 9:06 AM

This week's lines are from USAToday.com (as of Wednesday night). Pittsburgh @ Tennessee (+6) The Steelers (2-2) squeaked out a win last week over the Philadelphia Eagles 16-14. The run game seems to have turned around with the return of RB Rashard Mendenhall who made his debut this season after tearing his ACL last year. He rushed for 81 yards and a TD on 14 carries. The Titans (1-4) were blown out at Minnesota last week, 30-7. Backup QB Matt Hasselbeck started due to Jake Locker re-injuring his shoulder Week 4 in Houston. Hasselbeck threw for 200 yards and one TD while also throwing a pick. RB Chris Johnson had another bad outing, rushing 15 times for 24 yards. In the Titans' four losses this season, they have been outscored 140-44. Their defense is ranked last in points allowed (36.2) and ranks near the bottom in all other defensive categories. The offense isn't much better, they rank 26th in total yards per game (305), and 30th in rush yards per game (65.4). The Steelers defense should be able to shutdown the Titans. They rank 5th in total yards allowed per game (280) and are holding opposing QBs to 185 yards per game (3rd in the league). Mendenhall's return will rejuvenate the Steelers offense while the defense will shutdown RB Chris Johnson and the pass game. Expect to see another blowout loss by the Titans. Gimme the Steelers minus the points. Please make sure to check back Friday for my 4-Star picks and my take on the rest of the NFL schedule. SEASON RECAP (W-L-T) 4 Stars: 5-5-1 3 Stars: 10-6 2 Stars: 3-4-1 1 Star: 3-4 Total Record: 21-19-2

Start/Bench - Week 6 fantasysharks.com Wed 10/10/12 9:06 AM

I will not be adding or removing anyone from 'Studs' list this week. There are players on the verge of being added and being removed, but I'd like to see a little bit more either way before I make a move. But the season continues to march on, so let's take a look at Week 6's Start/Bench. QUARTERBACKS STUDS Tom Brady Drew Brees *Bye* Robert Griffin III *Concussion - Should play* Eli Manning Peyton Manning Cam Newton *Bye* Aaron Rodgers Ben Roethlisberger Matt Ryan Matthew Stafford START Kevin Kolb, Arizona vs. Buffalo: If you've got Kevin Kolb on your roster this is the game you've been waiting for as Buffalo is the most generous team in fantasy versus quarterbacks having given up 1,454 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, while only collecting four interceptions. And if that's not enough to convince you to put Kolb into your starting lineup, keep in mind that the Bills have allowed both Mark Sanchez, yes, the Mark Sanchez about to be replaced by Tim Tebow, and Alex Smith, yes, the Alex Smith who loses snaps to the Tebow-like Colin Kaepernick, to both throw for three touchdowns in a game this year. I think that's what my high school English teacher used to refer to as a run-on sentence. Whatever that means. Matt Schaub, Houston vs. Green Bay: From game-manager one week to game-changer the next. That's the new version of Matt Schaub. He won't be asked to carry the offense like he used to in years past but when the matchup is right, like in Week 3 when he passed for four touchdowns versus the Broncos, he can be elite. This week he'll be facing a Packers defense that has allowed a combined 808 yards passing and five touchdown passes over the last two weeks. Look for Schaub and wide receiver Andre Johnson to get back on track after a subpar Week 5 versus the Jets. Michael Vick, Philadelphia vs. Detroit: What do you get the quarterback who just can't seem to hang on to the football? How about a date with the Detroit Lions! The Lions have been very respectable versus opposing quarterbacks having only allowed 913 passing yards and five touchdowns in four games. But while they've held opposing QBs in check, they've only forced one turnover from the quarterback position, a Week 3 fumble by Jake Locker. Should the stars align and the Lions defense not harass Vick into any turnovers, this could be the breakout game of 2012 for the man with Teflon hands. BENCH Russell Wilson, Seattle vs. New England: Wilson is here just in case you were thinking about ...

Rock and a Hard Place - Week 4 fantasysharks.com Fri 9/28/12 8:00 AM

One thing to note: WR1s no longer need to fear the New York Jets. With Darrelle Revis out for the season, the Jets are now a desired passing matchup. So, Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne and Wes Welker just had their chances in upcoming dates with the Jets vastly improved. Let's move on to this week's desperation heaves. And, keep in mind, those heaves, even when they wind up in the hands of your opponent, can still somehow result in touchdowns. I'll list the player, their Week 4 matchup, and the percentage of leagues in which he is owned according to our friends at fleaflicker.com. Quarterback Christian Ponder at Detroit -- 45 percent. Ponder has been better than you probably realize this season. He's scored more points than Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Cam Newton and Tony Romo. Last week he lit up the vaunted San Francisco defense, and this week he gets a Lions defense that's been rocked by Alex Smith and Jake Locker the last two weeks. If he's available in your league, he might be worth an add. Shaun Hill vs. Minnesota -- 5 percent. This one gets a big time asterisk. Hill is worth picking up if, and only if, Stafford can't go on Sunday. Hill is a capable backup against a Vikings pass defense that is suspect at best. Oh, and he still has that Calvin Johnson guy, and I hear he's pretty good. Running Back Rashard Mendenhall, BYE -- 67 percent. I know he's on a bye, so this may not help you out all that much in Week 4. But maybe you can spare a roster spot or have an open Injured Reserve slot. In any case, Mendenhall will be back soon, possibly as soon as next week. He's already putting in full practices, and he's still the feature back in Pittsburgh. If you can stash him, he may be able to provide some serious value down the stretch. Ryan Williams vs. Miami -- 61 percent. Remember that Williams was having an impressive camp prior to last season, and there had been speculation that Chris ‘Beanie' Wells might lose his starting job then. Instead, Williams blew out his knee, but he's come back strong this season. He has ball security issues, but he also has some major talent. And with Wells now nursing an injury of his own, it's possible that Williams runs away with the gig. He gets a Miami defense in Week 4 that's been below average against the run. Arizona will run the ball to control the game. Look for Williams to play an important role. Wide Receiver Andrew Hawkins at Jacksonville -- 50 percent. Hawkins is on this list once again, because ...
