Spillman has been connected to an ongoing sexual assault investigation, the Dallas Morning News reports. The incident allegedly took place in Grapevine, located between Dallas and Fort Worth, so it likely took place after Spillman joined the Cowboys in September. There's no word yet on how he's involved, but given the bad press the NFL has gotten this year and Spillman's role as primarily a special teams player, the Cowboys likely won't hesitate to cut him loose if they feel the situation warrants it.

49ers S C.J. Spillman underwent surgery on his right hand Wednesday. Spillman posted a photo to his Instagram account that showed him with his right arm in a sling with the caption: "Fresh outta surgery ready to get my recovery together now!" Beat writer Matt Barrows confirms the special teams ace needed hand surgery. Spillman played just 79 defensive snaps last season.

C.J. Spillman is listed as the 49ers' starting free safety on the team's initial unofficial depth chart. Spillman, 27, played just 32 snaps on defense last season, but is a special teams stalwart. The Niners like to use Spillman in goal-line situations, but first-rounder Eric Reid is fully expected to earn the starting free safety job.

49ers SS C.J. Spillman has been working with the first-team defense during OTAs. Spillman was featured primarily on special teams last season, but still has developmental upside, and could be used in tandem with Donte Whitner on obvious passing downs. "We've had time to have a full spring with him," DB coach Ed Donatell said. "He's more mature as a professional, he's done a great job with our special teams and he's looking to increase his role. Things are great for him."

49ers re-signed S C.J. Spillman to a three-year, $6 million contract. The deal contains $1.8 million guaranteed. The Niners skipped over Spillman's restricted free agency to get him under contract through 2014. Spillman, 26 in May, led San Francisco with 19 special teams tackles in 2011 and has 36 over the past two seasons. On defense, Spillman is a backup strong safety.
