Wilson announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, Craig Morgan of FOX Sports Arizona reports. Wilson signed a one-day contract with the Cardinals, the team that drafted him in 2001 and with whom he spent 12 of his 14 NFL seasons. The hard-hitting safety earned five Pro Bowl selections while recording 27 interceptions and 25.5 sacks over his career, with the latter number the fourth-highest total for a defensive back in NFL history. He didn't appear in any games over the last two seasons after being placed on injured reserve by the Patriots in 2013 and getting cut by the Bears during training camp in 2014.

Wilson was cut by the Bears on Saturday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wilson was unable to put distance between himself and the competition among reserve safeties, recording six tackles (three solo) and a pass defended in three preseason games. The 35-year-old likely has something left in the tank, so it wouldn't surprise if he was scooped up by a needy team before the regular season commences.

Bears SS Adrian Wilson says he didn't tear his Achilles' last summer, but was dealing with Haglund's deformity. Haglund's deformity is most common in women. It's a bony enlargement on the back of the heel near the Achilles' tendon that often leads to bursitis, a painful inflammation of the bursa sac. It becomes irritated when rubbing against shoes. Wilson is competing for a roster spot in a wide-open Bears safety group.

Bears signed SS Adrian Wilson and TE Jeron Mastrud. A likely future member of the Arizona Cardinals' Ring of Honor, 34-year-old Wilson will give his fading career one last shot with the safety-needy Bears, who used Ryan Mundy and fourth-round pick Brock Vereen as starters during minicamp. Wilson is a strict in-the-box safety, and missed all of 2013 with a torn Achilles' tendon. Mastrud, formerly of the Raiders, is a blocking tight end.

Patriots released SS Adrian Wilson. New England's signing of Pat Chung made Wilson expendable. Now 34 years old, Wilson never played a snap for the Patriots in 2013 after signing a three-year, $5 million deal last March. He tore his Achilles' tendon in the preseason finale. Achilles' tears are career threatening even for young players, and this one could easily end Wilson's career. Wilson is a five-time Pro Bowler and one-time first-team All Pro. Though probably not a Hall of Famer, Wilson will eventually be a member of the Arizona Cardinals' Ring of Honor. He does hope to keep playing.

Adrian Wilson (Achilles') is expected to be ready for OTAs. Wilson tore his Achilles' last preseason and spent the year on I.R. It's no lock that he'll actually fully recover as a 34-year-old. Wilson also may not be long for New England. The Patriots can save $1.2 million against the cap by releasing him.

Patriots S Adrian Wilson (Achilles' surgery) suggested that he doesn't expect to be back in New England in 2014. Wilson signed a three-year deal with the Patriots back in March, but missed the entire season on injured reserve. Even if he manages to get healthy, Wilson will likely struggle to draw interest from teams as a rotational safety. New England can save $1.2 million in cap space by releasing Wilson this offseason.

Patriots S Adrian Wilson (injured reserve) tweeted that he underwent Achilles' surgery. Wilson was placed on injured reserve before the season started, but the team had made no announcement to what the injury was. We're not sure if Wilson tore his Achilles' or not, but he just recently began running on Thursday. He signed a three-year deal with the Patriots in March. At 34 years old, Wilson is a candidate to be released in the offseason. His career may be over.

Patriots placed S Adrian Wilson on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury, ending his season. The Patriots didn't announce what Wilson "injured." He played into the second half of Thursday's preseason finale. It's possible the Pats are just paying Wilson a veteran courtesy by letting him get paid instead of releasing him. Wilson was signed to be a hard-hitter and veteran leader in New England's safety corps, but looked greatly diminished in camp. Going on 34, it's possible the longtime Arizona Cardinal has played his final down of meaningful football.
