Bloomquist was released by the Mariners on Monday, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports. Unsurprisingly, the Mariners couldn't find a trading partner interested in acquiring a 37-year-old utility infielder, and as a long-time major-league veteran, Bloomquist was unwilling to accept an assignment to the minors. Bloomquist will look around and explore his options elsewhere, but given his age and the woeful .159/.194/.174 batting line he submitted with the Mariners this season, it could be the end of the road for him.

Boomquist was designated for assignment Thursday, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports. The Mariners needed to make a move to clear a roster spot for shortstop Chris Taylor, and the 37-year-old Boomquist is the casualty. Bloomquist played seven-and-a-half seasons with the Mariners, but his effectiveness has diminished of late, and he no longer holds much value as a pinch hitter and utility defensive player. Bloomquist will be subject to waivers and is unlikely to return to Seattle. He took to Twitter on Thursday afternoon to express his gratitude to the Seattle organization.

Bloomquist is in the lineup Wednesday against the Giants, batting seventh and playing left field. Bloomquist hasn't started a game in left field since May 20 against Baltimore, but it's his career numbers against Madison Bumgarner that may have earned him a spot in the order Wednesday. He is 6-for-16 lifetime with a home run and no strikeouts against Bumgarner.

Bloomquist went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Monday in only his fourth start of the season. Bloomquist has played only seven games this season, making his second start at first base Monday. His defense at shortstop, though, is not good, and he offers nothing at the plate. The Mariners probably would be better off calling up Chris Taylor to take his roster spot. The problem with that scenario, though, is the backup first baseman would be Rickie Weeks.

Bloomquist finished the spring slashing .317/.349/.415 in 18 games. Bloomquist underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee last August, but was able to return fully healthy for the spring. He figures to once again serve in a utility role in the Mariners' infield, but likely won't see too many at bats on a consistent basis.

He's endured no setbacks with his surgically-repaired knee during workloads, leaving a return to games the last item on his recovery checklist.
