Wolf has retired from baseball Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

A team reportedly called the southpaw to ask for his services, but he turned them down in favor of hanging it up. Wolf compiled a 133-125 record over 16 seasons.

Wolf failed to get out of the second inning against the Twins on Sunday, giving up six runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits and a walk.

He has given up 46 hits and 25 earned runs (28 runs total) in 33.2 innings since his arrival in Detroit. It's fair to say he's been a placeholder in the Detroit lineup and at 39 is nearing the end of the line.

Wolf went 7.0 innings and allowed just three earned runs Monday night in the second half of a doubleheader against the White Sox. It was a stronger performance than his last few and he put his team in line for a win. Unfortunately, the offence came up short in a 3-2 loss.

On a brighter note, he gave up just five hits and struck out six. But he still allowed four walks in the loss -- it's the second straight game where he has allowed four free passes. His pitches looked a lot livelier than his past few outings, but it wasn't enough to get the win. Or to be fantasy relevant.

Wolf lasted just three innings and gave up two runs on four hits and four walks in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Indians. He didn't factor into the decision.

EDGE Analysis

Remarkably, Wolf threw 93 pitches despite failing to make it out of the fourth inning. The veteran lefty is just a placeholder in the rotation while the Tigers play out the string on the season, so don't expect him to return to the organization in 2016.

Wolf was not effective in a no-decision Monday, allowing four runs in 4.1 innings against the Rays this Labor Day.

EDGE Analysis

Wolf's last two starts have been disastrous, allowing 12 runs in eight innings. After two strong starts immediately following his promotion, Wolf has fallen off a cliff of late. His next start is slated for this weekend against the Indians.

Wolf (0-3) was eviscerated in a loss to the Royals on Wednesday, lasting just 3.2 innings while giving up eight hits (including two home runs), eight runs and three walks.

EDGE Analysis

The Tigers are out of it, so they might just keep trotting Wolf out there. But that doesn't mean you should be doing the same, especially now that the fantasy postseason is upon us. We knew those first two surprisingly promising starts would have to give way to struggles sooner rather than later.

Wolf pitched seven shutout innings, conceding just four hits and a walk while striking out three in Triple-A Buffalo's 1-0 loss to Norfolk. That's now three straight starts without giving up an earned run and 21 straight innings. An encouraging sign for Wolf is that this was his second start giving up fewer than three walks. If he can continue to throw strikes, Wolf may end up on the major league roster sooner rather than later.

He's 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA and 17 strikeouts across 23 innings. The 38-year-old is a career 133 game winner, and while his best days are behind him, he may still have some gas in the tank as a spot starter for the Blue Jays if he gets called up at any point.

Wolf will be the first starter for Triple-A Buffalo, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports. Wolf was signed to a minor league contract in March, but is not on the 40-man roster. He could be called up as the Blue Jays have had to bring their other starters (Daniel Norris and Aaron Sanchez) into the Opening Day rotation in the wake of Marcus Stroman's injury. Wolf has extremely limited fantasy value unless he gets called up. Even if he does find playing time with the Blue Jays, he is likely an unreliable fantasy option until he can establish himself as a consistent starting pitcher at the major league level again.

Wolf signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays on Monday, Sportsnet reports. The 38-year-old appeared in six games for the Marlins last season, posting a 5.26 ERA with 19 strikeouts and six walks over 25.2 innings. If he's able to prove he can still be effective at the major league level, Wolf will provide depth to a staff that recently lost Marcus Stroman (knee) for the season.
