Cubs RHP Kerry Wood retired. Wood fittingly ended his career by striking out Dayan Viciedo, the lone hitter he faced, in Friday's game against the White Sox. He walked off the mound to a standing ovation and a hug from his son. The oft-injured right-hander made two All-Star games and won the Rookie of the Year award in 1998. Over a 14-year career, he went 86-75 with 63 saves, a 3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1,582 strikeouts across 1,380 innings.

Kerry Wood will make one more appearance for the Cubs before officially announcing his retirement. It will come sometime during the weekend series at Wrigley Field against the White Sox. Wood, who has posted an 8.64 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 5/11 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings this season, will get a nice sendoff from the home fans before riding off into the sunset.

Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reports that Kerry Wood will announce his retirement Friday. Wood said at the end of last season that he was either going to pitch for the Cubs in 2012 or retire, but this still comes as a surprise. He's been woeful so far this season, posting an 8.64 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 5/11 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings, but the right-hander will turn just 35 next month. It's not clear if the oft-injured right-hander is dealing with something physically or if he's just decided to call it quite. He'll end his career with an 86-75 record, 63 saves, a 3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 1,581 strikeouts over 1,379 2/3 innings across 14 seasons.

Major League Baseball has decided not to discipline Kerry Wood for his actions on Tuesday night. Wood tossed his glove and hat into the stands after giving up two runs in an inning to the Braves. The 34-year-old right-hander has given up a pair of runs in each of his appearances since returning from the disabled list. It's unfortunate timing for the veteran, as there is a Lake Michigan-sized hole at the back end of Chicago's bullpen. Carlos Marmol is out and Rafael Dolis has the sex appeal of Dr. Phil. Wood doesn't figure to work his way up the hierarchy anytime soon, despite the dearth of talent in front of him -- a 14.54 ERA and as many DL stints and blown saves as converted saves and holds combined will ensure that.

Making his first appearance back from the DL, Kerry Wood gave up two runs in the eighth inning Friday against the Dodgers. Wood was credited with a hold anyway, but the performance certainly doesn't bode well for his chances of taking over the closer's role anytime soon. He's given up five runs in 3 1/3 innings overall.

Cubs activated RHP Kerry Wood from the 15-day disabled list. Wood spent a little over two weeks recovering from right shoulder fatigue and will return to his setup role on Thursday against the Reds. The veteran right-hander is doubtful to hold much fantasy value this year.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Kerry Wood (shoulder) could be used in the seventh inning when he returns from the disabled list. Rafael Dolis holds a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP (though he's also walked eight over 13 1/3 innings), and the Cubs will likely keep him in a primary setup role for now and ease Wood back into the role. "Just to take a little stress off the whole situation, when he first comes back, we'll possibly just move him into the seventh inning role and see what happens there," Sveum said. Wood threw 22 pitches in a simulated game on Monday and will be activated on Thursday or Friday.

Kerry Wood (shoulder) threw a simulated game Monday. Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio said the throwing session went "great." Wood remains on track for a Thursday return and it appears a minor league rehab assignment will not be necessary.

Kerry Wood (shoulder) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Friday. The next step is for Wood to throw a simulated game Monday. The Cubs are hopeful he'll be ready to return by the end of their roadtrip next Thursday.

Kerry Wood (shoulder) threw off a mound Tuesday. Wood was placed on the disabled list last Friday with right shoulder fatigue, but he's already feeling much better. The timetable for his return isn't yet known.
