Don't expect him to have a chance to improve on that until after the upcoming season.

The recently acquired righty struggled during his first five starts with the Padres, notching an 8.76 ERA to go with a 1.95 WHIP while allowing a staggering 11 home runs in 24.2 innings before landing on the DL. With Saturday's diagnosis, Johnson will be out until at least late July and he could be sidelined well into August. Given his performance as a starter, he may not return to the rotation immediately upon his activation from the disabled list.

The move to the disabled list was made retroactive to June 29, so Johnson will be eligible to return to the club after the All-Star Break on July 15. It was reported Wednesday that Johnson would either be bumped from the rotation or that the Padres would utilize a six-man rotation since Andrew Cashner will be activated off the DL on Sunday, but now he will take Johnson's spot.

Andrew Cashner is set to be activated from the DL on Sunday, meaning the Padres have some decisions to make. Johnson has a 8.33 ERA in six big league starts this year, so it's easy to see him getting bounced from the rotation, if not next week, then soon after the All-Star break. Either way, he's not much of a fantasy option in the vast majority of formats.

Johnson (0-4) allowed four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over five innings in a loss Tuesday to the Orioles.

Johnson gave up two more home runs and has now allowed 14 in just six starts. He has a 4.0 HR/9, and frankly it's a miracle his ERA is as low as 8.33 considering how hard hitters are punishing his mistakes with regularity this season.

Johnson (0-5) was bombed Wednesday for the third time in three starts as a Padre, giving up six runs on nine hits in four innings in a loss to the Orioles. He struck out three and walked one.

EDGE Analysis

Johnson was bad with the White Sox before coming over in the James Shields deal, and he's been just as bad with San Diego. Indeed, he's taken the loss in all five of his starts this yea and given up a horrifying seven homers in just 26.1 innings. The 26-year-old has had a good amount of success in the minors, but he's showing no signs at all of putting it together in the major leagues. Until he does, he's waiver-wire material in nearly all fantasy formats.
