Mastroianni was released by the Twins on Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
The veteran appeared in only seven games for the big league club this season, failing to notch a hit in 11 plate appearances. He spent the bulk of the year at Triple-A, but with Byron Buxton back at Rochester, Mastroianni's services were no longer needed. The career .206 major league hitter will now look to latch on with another organization, likely on a minor league deal.

Mastroianni (oblique) was activated from the DL on Monday, but the Twins outrighted him off the 40-man roster, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mastroianni only fit in a brief showing with the Twins this season before landing on the disabled list in late May. When he attempted to start his rehab assignment in mid-June, he experienced a setback, pushing back his first rehab appearance to July 1. In three games with Triple-A Rochester in the meantime, the outfielder tallied at least one hit on each occasion, but the organization will instead turn in another direction with his 40-man roster spot.

He was set to play his first game Friday but had discomfort while swinging the bat. It's not clear when he may play in his first game for Rochester.

Mastroianni begins his rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester on Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports
EDGE Analysis
Mastroianni has been hampered by an oblique injury that's kept him out of games since May 21. The outfielder began running sprints and playing catch several weeks ago so he should be nearing 100 percent at this point. The 30-year-old will likely participate in a few tune up games with Minnesota's Triple-A affiliate and could return to the majors early next week.

Mastroianni (oblique) ran straight-ahead sprints at 75 percent and played catch at 90 feet out Tuesday, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
He is making tangible progress from an oblique injury, but Mastroianni still has several important hurdles to clear. While he's also swung a bat underwater without issue, he will need take dry swings and hit flip-toss before progressing to batting practice and ultimately a rehab assignment.

Mastroianni was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique injury on Wednesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mastroianni had nine at-bats in seven appearances in the majors this season before injuring his oblique, and had four strikeouts, two walks, and zero hits. Mastroanni provided direly needed outfield depth for the Twins, and could be called up again despite his struggles at the plate once he recovers.

Mastroianni was called up from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mastroianni hasn't been spectacular at the Triple-A level this season, as he holds a lowly .208 batting average and is striking out 22.1% of the time. However, he is walking at a 14.7% clip and can play each outfield position, which was enough to warrant a roster move. Despite the vote of confidence, he'll likely be limited to being a reserve outfielder for the Twins.

Mastroianni was traded to the Nationals in exchange for cash considerations Tuesday, The Morning Call's Stephen Gross reports. While the Nationals' starting outfielders are all currently healthy, the team's depth has been depleted by injuries. Mastroianni may not immediately be needed on the big-league roster, but he could help with depth down the road. He owns an ugly .212/.274/.289 slash line over 306 career big-league plate appearances, but with 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts. At the very least, he should be useful as a pinch-runner in September.

Mastroianna was re-assigned to minor league camp Wednesday. Mastroianni entered the spring with a chance to crack the big league roster after signing with the Phillies over the offseason, but he struggled mightily with just one hit in 17 at bats in Grapefruit League action. The 29-year-old will likely head to Triple-A after spending the majority of 2014 there and will be in line for a promotion if the parent club needs further outfield depth.
