Smith put up his first two-point game of the season in a 3-1 win over New Jersey on Saturday. He scored a goal and added an assist.
EDGE Analysis
Smith has just 10 points on the season, but four of those have come in his the last five games. He's nowhere near his production of last season (25 goals, 11 assists), so it's looking more and more like that was a complete outlier. Right now, Smith's value in most formats is limited.

Smith assisted on the game-winning goal and added four hits in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Montreal.
EDGE Analysis
While Smith helped the Sens grab a win after losing two straight, the winger has been on fantasy benches for quite some time. The 28-year-old is in stuck in a highly unproductive slump, notching just two points in his last 15 contests (three in four games to start the year). The offense as a whole hasn't been scoring -- 28th in goals for -- leaving most with unappealing numbers to being their campaigns. Smith is a victim of a struggling attack and until they show promise, he's not a safe start.

Smith (undisclosed) was at practice Saturday, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith missed Friday's practice with an undisclosed ailment, but it doesn't look to be a factor moving forward. Although he was off to a scorching start, the 28-year-old has not managed points in six straight. He'll look to end that cold streak Saturday against Buffalo.

Smith missed practice Friday with an undisclosed ailment, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.
EDGE Analysis
Smith's status for Saturday's game against Buffalo is now in question. The 28-year-old has been ice cold lately, recording no points in his last six outings (11 PIM). The winger's status should be updated before the puck drops, although he may already be on your bench due to his recent inconsistent performances.

Smith recorded four shots on goal during Tuesday's 3-0 win against the Canucks.
EDGE Analysis
Smith may not have reached the box score, but he could be looking at extended time in the bottom six. Coach Guy Boucher placed the winger on the third line, a move that was expected to be made before Clarke MacArthur (concussion) went down and finally came to fruition. The 28-year-old was excelling next to Derick Brassard and Bobby Ryan -- two goals and an assist -- but his new role could end up being beneficial. Not only does he have chemistry with Jean-Gabriel Pageau, but 60-point Mark Stone also made his way down to the third line. The move may not stick, but with the added firepower, Smith's outlook is still positive going forward.

Smith said he would like to re-sign with the Senators when asked about his expiring contract, but the winger won't take a hometown discount, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports. "I want to be here. I love the new changes we've made. It's kind of put a new spark in our club. It feels like we have a really solid direction, and I want to be a part of that. but ultimately, it's up to them. Whenever they want to get going, we can talk."
EDGE Analysis
"I would take three more of him," said coach Guy Boucher. Smith didn't receive a contract extension after last year's 25-goal campaign, which should come as no surprise. While calling it a fluke may be going too far, the 28-year-old had never surpassed 14 tallies in his previous seven seasons with the Senators. The 2008 third-round pick has also struggled to keep a clean bill of health in the past. However, Smith is off to a hot start this year -- two goals and an assist -- and looks to be on a mission to repeat his 2015-16 performance. As long as the winger remains in the top six, he's a realistic bet to reach 20-plus again and earn another contract with Ottawa.

Smith scored a shorthanded goal and added two PIM during Tuesday's 7-4 win over Arizona.
EDGE Analysis
In case it isn't obvious by now, Smith thoroughly enjoys increased opportunity. The winger has stepped up in the absence of Clarke MacArthur (concussion), much like last season's 25-goal surprise. The 28-year-old has equaled teammate Bobby Ryan's production so far -- two goals and an assist -- and shows no signs of slowing down.

Smith scored a goal on three shots and added six hits during Saturday's 4-3 shootout win over the Canadiens.
EDGE Analysis
That's two straight with points for Smith to start out the season. Rather quietly, the 28-year-old is a threat skating next to Derick Brassard and Bobby Ryan on the second line. If he continues to perform at a high level, coach Guy Boucher will have a decision to make once Clarke MacArthur (concussion) is able to return. For now, ride the winger with confidence.

Smith notched an assist, two PIM and five hits during Wednesday's 5-4 overtime win against the Maple Leafs
EDGE Analysis
As long as Smith stays involved on the top six, he should be able to reach the box score. Talented center Derick Brassard and scorer Bobby Ryan elevate the winger's play, providing nice value along the way. It'll be interesting to see how the lines shake up once Clarke MacArthur (concussion) returns, but for now, deploy Smith as needed.

Coach Guy Boucher has placed Smith on the second line to start the season, Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen reports.
EDGE Analysis
The head coach is going with the safe route, as Smith showed last year that he can thrive in an increased role. Even though Ottawa has expressed their desire to put the winger in a checking role, the injury to Clarke MacArthur (concussion) has simply thrown a wrench in that plan. The 28-year-old dropped 25 goals and 11 assists last year, playing predominately in the top six. While the tally total will be tough to follow, Smith is a solid asset for fantasy teams that can be deployed when needed. However, with slightly mixed messages from the coaches, it wouldn't be surprising to see the winger drop down to the bottom six, decreasing his value.
